Gareth Southgate and his men have been underwhelming so far in Germany. Slovakia will be confident, they've already recorded one shock result.
England hasn’t been an enjoyable watch. It’s been slow and negative, with very little attacking threat. Gareth Southgate isn’t a fan favourite by any means. The Three Lions topped Group C with five points. An improved performance is expected as the favourites for Euro 2024 take on Slovakia in Gelsenkirchen.
The defence has been strong. Marc Guehi has performed exceptionally alongside the reliable John Stones. England have found themselves on the favourable side of the draw. A win here, and it’s Switzerland up next in the quarterfinals. It won’t be easy, especially if we witness another dull display.
Francesco Calzona’s men finished third in Group E. They began their campaign with a fantastic victory over Belgium. Ukraine came from behind to beat them in Düsseldorf. A point was enough to guarantee qualification into the knockout stage. Their draw with Romania in round three confirmed their place here.
Slovakia are in for a tricky affair. They’ll relish the chance of playing an England side under pressure. Slovakia won't give anything away easily. Stanislav Lobotka has been excellent in Germany. Juraj Kucka and Ondrej Duda combine for a strong midfield trio. The defence has many recognisable names, such as Dubravka, Skriniar and Hancko.
England and Slovakia should be relatively familiar with one another. They’ve met three times since 2016. Every encounter has been tight. The first of three ended goalless in Euro 2016. England won 1-0 and 2-1 in World Cup qualifying in 2016 and 2017, respectively. Another clash with few goals is likely once again.
England will have their fair share of the ball. They had 73% possession in their stalemate with Slovenia. Interestingly, Denmark managed more possession and recorded more passes against Southgate’s men. Slovakia will have their opportunities in possession. Lobotka will be the man who will make things tick.
We have a strong understanding of how this game will take shape. England's quality will shine. I hope so, anyway. Slovakia will keep themselves in the encounter. They have plenty of experience in their squad.
Here are three interesting stats ahead of this Euro 2024 match between England vs Slovakia.
Of course, England are the side that are difficult to back against. That’s even after watching their uninspiring performances. They’ll be tough to beat. I’m expecting an improved performance in an encounter that they’ll edge.
England Win & Under 3.5 Goals is my selection at 1.91 (10/11)
Quality is abundant in this England squad. We’ve yet to see them get out of first gear. Surely things get better on Sunday evening? I’m backing England to win this clash in a low-scoring affair. My selection is England Win & Under 3.5 Goals. The price is 1.91 (10/11).
Slovakia have proven that they’re not here to make up the numbers. They’ve already beaten Belgium and have Ukraine a good run for their money. Calzona’s men will be organised and difficult to break down. It’s an experienced squad, especially in defence.
The Three Lions have conceded just once. Morten Hjulmand’s long-range effort was the only goal they've let in. Denmark gave England their trickiest match. Serbia and Slovenia created next to nothing, just ten shots combined.
I’m hoping we can trust England to navigate their way past Slovakia. Kane, Saka, Bellingham and Foden have performed exceptionally for their respective clubs this term. Anthony Gordon and Cole Palmer will be desperate to start. Again, the pair have stood out for Newcastle and Chelsea in their debut campaigns for Newcastle and Chelsea, respectively.
Believe. England should be winning this clash. It may not be the most entertaining of encounters. A win is likely in a low-scoring affair. The price of an England Win & Under 3.5 Goals is appealing at 1.91 (10/11).
