Two mid-table sides with lingering relegation fears meet on Sunday, when FC Augsburg welcome FC Cologne to the SGL Arena. The visitors currently sit in 12th place in the Bundesliga table, with the hosts a place and three points behind them. With just four points between them and the relegation play-off place, neither side will want to slip up this weekend. Read on to see where to find the best betting value in this Bundesliga clash!
Heiko Herrlich’s Augsburg side have been in pretty poor form since the league resumed action. In the four games since the resumption, the Fuggerstädter have only won once. That victory came in their second game after the restart, when they won 3-0 away at Schalke 04. Prior to that game, they were beaten 2-1 at home by VfL Wolfsburg. They followed it up with a 0-0 draw at home to FC Paderborn, before losing 2-0 away at Hertha Berlin last weekend. They need to improve quickly if they want to remove those last, lingering fears about dropping out of German football’s top tier.
Markus Gisdol’s Billy Goats are meandering along to the end of the season with very little to play for. They are eight points off a European qualification place, and seven points above the relegation play-off spot. As long as they hold their nerve, they should not be in any danger of relegation. But finding motivation when there is little positive to play can be hard, and Gisdol needs to ensure that complacency does not creep into his team’s mindset. Since the restart, they have lost two and drawn two, and conceded at least two goals in all four games.
Recent history between these two sides certainly favours Augsburg. The home side on Sunday have not lost to Cologne in the last 10 Bundesliga meetings between the teams. Indeed, the last time that the Billy Goats beat Augsburg was back in October 2011, when Cologne won the game at home 3-0. That run is a club record for Augsburg. Cologne have faced Augsburg 11 times in total in the top flight and have won only once.
Cologne coach Gisdol’s record against Augsburg does not give grounds for optimism for Billy Goats fans. The coach has lost four of his five career games against the Fuggerstädter, and also lost when he last faced current Augsburg coach Herrlich. That was when the duo were in charge of Hamburg and Bayer Leverkusen respectively.
One thing that Cologne do have in their favour is that they are capable of scoring goals. Although Gisdol’s team have leaked at least two goals in every game since the Bundesliga resumed action, they have also scored at least one goal in all four of those games. If they can sort things out at the back, then they certainly have enough attacking power to win the game on Sunday. The Billy Goats’ Colombian striker Jhon Cordoba is the Bundesliga’s joint-fourth placed goalscorer currently, with 12 goals to his name. If you think that he can score at any time in the game on Sunday, then Paddy Power are offering odds of 17/10. He is 9/2 to score the game’s first goal.
Augsburg, in contrast, have not scored in their last two games. Since the resumption of the Bundesliga, they have only scored four goals, and three of those came in the win over Schalke. Florian Niederlechner is the team’s current top Bundesliga goalscorer, with 11 league goals to his name in 2019/20. They will hope he can find some form this weekend as he has not scored since the resumption. He was a substitute in their last game, coming off the bench at half-time.
Our suspicion is that this game will end in a low scoring draw, with 1-1 the likeliest outcome. Neither of these teams have much to play for, though neither will want to increase their slight chances of dropping into a relegation battle. Cologne tend to concede more goals than they score at the moment, but Augsburg have not been in good form when it comes to finding the opposition net in recent games. Our recommended tip comes from Paddy Power, where you can find a price of 3/1 on the game being a draw where both team score.
