Fifth place has been enough to secure Champions League football in each of the last two Premier League seasons, and it’s likely to be the case again this term.
Liverpool were the latest beneficiaries of England's strong coefficient performance. Tipster Ben Smith has covered the Reds and the other title contenders in his Premier League winner betting preview.
In this instalment of his ante-post free football betting tips, he focuses on the teams priced at odds-against to finish in the top five but who will be looking to force their way in. Odds are with BetMGM.
Despite back-to-back 17th-place finishes and a narrow escape from relegation last term, there is genuine optimism around Tottenham Hotspur that they can compete at the top end of the table this time around.
They have spent big on Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes and Jan Paul van Hecke, while also securing Andrew Robertson and Marcos Senesi on free transfers.
Spurs were plagued by injuries in 2025/26, but James Maddison is back in action, and Mohammed Kudus is reportedly close to making his return.
Roberto De Zerbi has a track record of making an immediate impact, and with a much stronger squad at his disposal, it would be no surprise to see Spurs break into the top five.
Typically, losing a duo like Youri Tielemans and Morgan Rogers would make you fear for Aston Villa, but there is still a sense that everything will be fine and could potentially get even better under Unai Emery.
The West Midlands side received £117m for Rogers and replaced him with exciting young Swiss midfielder Johan Manzambi, who impressed at the World Cup. Joao Gomes has also arrived to fill the void left by Tielemans, while Alejandro Garnacho could prove to be an inspired loan signing if he thrives in an environment that the players seem to love. Most of their key senior players are staying put and remain in their peak years, while perhaps the most exciting prospect for the campaign ahead is 17-year-old Brian Madjo, the 6ft 4in striker who scored against Paris Saint-Germain in the Super Cup.
Brighton are one of the Premier League’s most stable clubs, with finishes of 9th, 6th, 11th, 8th and 8th across the last five seasons.
The Seagulls have threatened Champions League qualification during that time, particularly in 2022/23, when they were still in contention heading into the final weeks of the campaign.
As you would expect from a club like Brighton, they have enjoyed another summer of smart business, with several exciting young players coming in. If their previous recruitment record is anything to go by, there is every chance those additions will prove successful.
This is Fabian Hurzeler's third season in charge, and he has now had plenty of time to implement his style and help shape the squad he wants. It could be time for Brighton to mount a serious push for a Champions League berth, something that increasingly feels like a matter of when rather than if.
Few, if any, Premier League clubs have undergone more significant change than Newcastle United this summer. Eddie Howe has been replaced by Matthias Jaissle in the dugout, while star trio Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes and Anthony Gordon have all moved on.
In the long run, those may prove to be good decisions, and Newcastle have invested heavily in replacements. However, the average age of their five signings so far is just 20.4, so expecting immediate success from such a young group is a big ask.
Everton's 13th-place finish in 2025/26 doesn't quite tell the whole story. In March, they beat Chelsea 3-0 at home to move within three points of the top five with seven games remaining, giving them real hope of securing Champions League football.
However, David Moyes' side picked up just three more points during a bitterly disappointing end to what had, until then, been a solid campaign.
There are concerns over how many goals their centre-forwards have in them, while they also look short on the right-hand side of the pitch. With those issues still unresolved, it is difficult to see the Toffees making a significant improvement this term.
Tottenham are the obvious pick, but 15/8 is a little skinny, so I'd rather take a chance on Brighton at a much more attractive 11/2.
There is so much transition among the title contenders that we could see as many as three of them drop out of the top five, potentially paving the way for a stable, well-run outfit such as Brighton to take advantage.
Aston Villa would be my next best selection but they’ve got a tough first couple of games so I’ll be leaving them for now.
