Promoted clubs face a difficult battle to stay in the Premier League every year, and this season is no different.
Hull City, Ipswich Town and Coventry City are all odds-on for relegation, as tipster Ben Smith highlighted in his Premier League relegation betting preview.
In this article, he looks at the upside of each of the three sides that earned promotion from the Championship last term before recommending his best bet in the top promoted club market.
These football betting tips feature odds from BetMGM.
Ipswich are favourites to perform best of the three promoted clubs, despite losing Kieran McKenna, who had been in charge since 2021 and masterminded their rise from League One to the Premier League.
Even though they were relegated from the Premier League in 2024/25, it has been a hugely successful period for Ipswich. Omari Hutchinson and Liam Delap, both signed ahead of that top-flight campaign, were later sold for significant profits, while some smart business last summer strengthened a squad that was already well equipped to launch another promotion push.
That push ultimately proved successful, and Ipswich have now added proven Premier League quality. Sasa Lukic and Issa Diop have both arrived from Fulham, while former Benfica midfielder Florentino Luis joins after making 31 Premier League appearances for Burnley last term.
Julio Enciso has also returned to the club and is another known quantity at this level. Meanwhile, the Tractor Boys have taken a punt on 22-year-old striker Emersonn from Toulouse as they look to add more firepower.
New boss Gary O'Neil was bullish in his first press conference, insisting he was "100% sure" Ipswich would stay in the Premier League and that he had "no doubts" about their ability to achieve that goal.
Frank Lampard will be hoping that continuity works in Coventry's favour. He has kept the core of his promotion-winning squad together, while several of the summer arrivals already know the club well. Carl Rushworth and Frank Onyeka were both part of last season's squad, while Gustavo Hamer returns three years after leaving for Sheffield United.
Lampard has acknowledged that Coventry will find life considerably tougher in the Premier League, but his public message has been one of excitement rather than fear, and there appears to be genuine belief that the squad can make the step up.
The Sky Blues won the Championship by 11 points, although that margin perhaps flattered them. Ipswich were actually the slightly stronger side according to expected points, with Coventry collecting 11 points more than their underlying numbers suggested they should have.
Alongside the players who already know the club, Coventry have invested in exciting young talent. The standout is 20-year-old Ghana midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi, their club-record signing, who was named the Danish Superliga's Young Player of the Year before enhancing his reputation with an impressive World Cup.
Loum Tchaouna is another intriguing addition, with the 22-year-old winger possessing plenty of potential despite struggling for consistent end product during his first season in the Premier League with Burnley.
Swiss centre-back Aurele Amenda has also been added, having established himself at Eintracht Frankfurt last season after initially struggling for regular minutes in the Bundesliga.
Sergej Jakirovic certainly isn't approaching the campaign with an inferiority complex. The Hull boss has emphatically backed his side to survive, stating “we will survive. I don't know fear”, and has pointed to Sunderland's success last season as a blueprint for the Tigers.
In reality, Hull will need to defy the underlying numbers again to have any chance of staying up. They had the fourth-worst defensive record in the Championship and were fortunate not to concede even more, according to the data. Ultimately, their performances did not warrant such a high league position, let alone a successful play-off campaign.
Hull have already made 11 signings this summer, yet the squad still looks in need of further additions. Oli McBurnie remains their only established centre-forward and, while he enjoyed an excellent 2025/26 campaign with 17 league goals, he has never come close to matching that output in the Premier League.
Hull's biggest investment has been Nobel Mendy. The 21-year-old centre-back impressed in La Liga with Rayo Vallecano last season, prompting the Tigers to break their transfer record to sign him.
Konstantinos Tzolakis looks a good addition in goal, having spent the past two seasons as Olympiacos' first choice while gaining experience in both the Champions League and Europa League.
Ipswich are my pick to finish highest of the promoted sides. They were already marginally better than Coventry according to the data last season, and their summer business looks more suited to Premier League success. At 11/8, the Tractor Boys look a fair price to come out on top.
