The Premier League has produced three different champions in as many seasons, with Arsenal the latest side to lift the trophy after finally ending their long wait for a league title in 2025/26.
Mikel Arteta’s side came agonisingly close to completing a Premier League and Champions League double, only to fall short against PSG on penalties in Budapest. They nevertheless look well equipped to go again this term as they attempt to add more silverware to their cabinet.
The usual suspects will be looking to stop them domestically. Manchester City were Arsenal’s nearest challengers last term and could be again, while Liverpool, twice champions this decade, will be hoping to bounce back from a disappointing campaign. Manchester United and Chelsea will also feel they are closer to mounting a genuine title challenge than they have been in recent years.
Tipster Ben Smith has assessed the leading contenders and picked out his best bet in this instalment of his ante post football betting tips. All odds below are from BetMGM.
Defending champions tend to be favourites to retain their title the following year, and the biggest reason why that looks particularly justified for Arsenal this time around is their stability.
It has been a relatively quiet summer in terms of the volume of incomings and outgoings, largely because Arteta already has a balanced squad with quality and strength in depth across virtually every position. Bruno Guimaraes represents a significant upgrade in midfield and, while Arsenal missed out on Vinicius Jr, they could still bring in another top winger, with Gabriel Martinelli heading for the exit door.
The biggest question mark may be whether Arsenal can maintain the same intensity after finally ending their long wait for a Premier League title. There is potential for both mental and physical fatigue, particularly after a summer World Cup in which several key players carried heavy workloads. William Saliba suffered a back issue during the tournament, Bukayo Saka played through an injury, while Declan Rice had already clocked close to 4,500 minutes for Arsenal last season before representing England over the summer.
The Community Shield is rarely a great indicator of a team's prospects for the campaign ahead, but it is impossible to completely ignore Manchester City's 3-0 defeat to Arsenal.
City fans' day got even worse later that night as reports emerged that a deal had been agreed for Rodri to join Barcelona. Even with Elliot Anderson arriving in a £116m deal, their midfield still looks set to regress, with Bernardo Silva already gone.
The biggest absence, though, will be that of Pep Guardiola. Enzo Maresca may well prove a success at City, but it is a big ask for him to achieve what the great Spaniard couldn't last season and topple this Arsenal side.
A fifth-place finish wasn't enough for Arne Slot to keep his job at Liverpool, despite the Dutchman having delivered a Premier League title just 12 months earlier.
Reds fans had few complaints about the decision, though, and there is optimism that Andoni Iraola will bring a more exciting style of football to Anfield.
This, however, has all the makings of a transitional campaign. Liverpool's pre-season performances have suggested they could initially struggle to sustain Iraola's high-intensity pressing style for entire matches, a problem that has not been unfamiliar during the early stages of the manager's previous tenures.
Manchester United's transfer business last summer went remarkably well, which has been a rare statement to make since Sir Alex Ferguson's departure.
The attacking trio of Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha all provided value, while goalkeeper Senne Lammens proved to be one of the signings of the season.
They still need a strong end to this transfer window before they can be taken truly seriously as title contenders. The capture of Youri Tielemans looks a fairly safe bet at the price, while the decision to buy Andrey Santos from Chelsea perhaps raised a few more eyebrows.
The Red Devils are likely to fall short of the title, but with so much transition elsewhere, they cannot be ruled out as Arsenal's nearest challengers.
As ever with Chelsea, there has been plenty of transfer activity this summer to go alongside the appointment of Xabi Alonso.
Morgan Rogers is the marquee signing, but Maxence Lacroix looks the smartest piece of business in a window that has also seen them bring in a pair of 35-plus-year-olds in Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson.
Still, the squad looks a touch unbalanced and they remain short in some areas. Robert Sanchez continues to look like a weak link in goal, while Marc Cucurella will be a difficult man to replace at left-back.
The case for Arsenal isn't without its flaws - there is no guarantee that some of those key players will be able to pick themselves up and go again - but three of the other four main contenders have new managers and are undergoing significant change, while Manchester United's squad doesn't quite have enough as it stands.
Arteta's men look best placed to retain the Premier League title, and I'm happy to put them up at 5/4.
