More than a month after matchday one, the Champions League returns with another midweek feast of football, as 16 matches take place across Tuesday 13th and Wednesday 14th October.
There were few surprises in the opening round, with the eight leading favourites to lift the trophy all getting off to winning starts. The table already has a familiar look, with reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain leading the way ahead of Bayern Munich and Barcelona.
Last season’s runners-up Arsenal won 1-0 at Napoli, but the scoreline didn’t do them justice. Mikel Arteta’s side had 26 shots to the hosts’ five and generated more than four expected goals, dominating at a ground where English teams have often struggled.
Real Madrid’s meeting with Inter Milan was among the standout fixtures of matchday one. Goals from Kylian Mbappe and Federico Valverde secured victory for Los Blancos, but it was far from comfortable. Inter posed a persistent threat after the interval, prompting audible frustration from the Bernabeu crowd as Madrid struggled to put the game to bed.
Liverpool also emerged victorious from a heavyweight encounter against Atletico Madrid. Marcos Llorente continued his habit of troubling the Reds at Anfield by opening the scoring, before goals either side of half-time from Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister secured three points in Andoni Iraola’s first Champions League outing as a manager.
Atletico face another English opponent on Tuesday, welcoming Manchester United to the Spanish capital. However, Manchester City’s home clash with PSG arguably tops the bill this week.
Champions League tipster Ben Smith picks out his five best bets for the midweek Champions League action, combining them into an accumulator with BetMGM.
Arsenal welcome Lille to the Emirates looking to maintain their winning start in Europe after beating Leeds United at the weekend.
William Saliba and Christos Tzolis remain unavailable, while Viktor Gyokeres could start as Mikel Arteta manages Kai Havertz’s workload following recent injury concerns. Gyokeres scored in all four Sweden matches during the international break, with Bukayo Saka, Eberechi Eze and Martin Odegaard providing further attacking quality.
Lille have conceded in 12 consecutive Champions League away games, a concerning record against hosts who have scored at least three goals in five of their last six home league-phase fixtures.
The visitors’ recent away form deserves respect, but Arsenal have the firepower to win comfortably. The -1 handicap is the selection.
Manchester United head to Madrid after another concerning result, failing to beat 10-man Tottenham Hotspur despite taking the lead.
Michael Carrick is without Benjamin Sesko and Matthijs de Ligt, while Diego Simeone has a full squad available.
United have made their worst league start in 40 years and remain winless away this season. Saturday’s draw exposed how little belief there is in this side, with supporters booing them off at both half-time and full-time.
Atletico, meanwhile, have won four successive league games and nine of their last 11 home Champions League group or league-phase fixtures. They look well placed to compound United’s misery with another victory.
A lack of attacking threat was the biggest concern in Liverpool’s 3-0 defeat against Manchester City, and those problems could follow them to Austria.
With Cody Gakpo and Alexander Isak missing at the weekend, Florian Wirtz and Bradley Barcola again struggled to make an impact. Dominik Szoboszlai is also a doubt here and without him, the visitors look short of inspiration.
Despite their own poor form, LASK have lost only twice in their last 16 European home matches.
An away win is still plausible, but there is little reason to expect Liverpool to run away with it. The hosts appeal on the handicap.
Both teams to score and over 2.5 goals has landed in each of Villa’s last five matches across all competitions.
Their 2-2 draw with Brentford continued that trend at the weekend, while Fenerbahce arrive having scored eleven goals across their two latest domestic victories.
Two outstanding attacks meet at the Etihad, where City’s defensive vulnerabilities make over 3.5 goals an appealing option.
Sunday’s 3-0 win at Liverpool was impressive, but conceding three against Sunderland in their previous home league game showed how exposed they can be.
PSG have the quality to punish those lapses, with Ousmane Dembele expected to return and Ferran Torres having scored a hat-trick on matchday one.
At the other end, Rayan Cherki’s excellent form adds to City’s threat. With the hosts winning eight straight games and PSG scoring freely, neither attack should be short of confidence heading into this clash.
