The league phase of the 2026/27 UEFA Champions League gets underway on Tuesday, September 8 and runs through to Thursday, September 10, with Europe’s leading clubs beginning their pursuit of the biggest prize in club football.

Paris Saint-Germain start their quest for a third successive European title at home to Slovan Bratislava on Wednesday. The French champions are 5/1 joint favourites alongside Barcelona, while last season’s runners-up Arsenal are priced at 6/1 with Bayern Munich, just behind the leading pair.

One of the biggest stories of the new campaign is José Mourinho’s return to Real Madrid. The Portuguese coach has twice lifted the trophy, with Porto and Inter Milan, but was unable to deliver Champions League glory during his first three-year spell in the Spanish capital, which began in 2010. Back at the Bernabéu for another attempt, Mourinho’s Madrid are 13/2 to go all the way.

Manchester City are next in the outright betting at 9/1 as they look to reclaim the trophy, while Liverpool can be backed at 12/1. Manchester United, returning to Europe’s elite competition, are further down the market at 20/1, with every other contender available at odds of 28/1 or bigger.

Club Brugge vs Aston Villa - Club Brugge Double Chance & Over 1.5 Goals (17/20)

Belgian outfit Club Brugge look well placed to avoid defeat against an Aston Villa side that have started the season poorly.

Unai Emery’s side are winless in three Premier League matches and are yet to score, with only one shot on target across those games. Brugge, meanwhile, have won four of their opening five league fixtures and reached the Champions League knockout stages in each of their last three appearances.

Their European matches also tend to deliver goals, with each of their last 13 Champions League games going over 2.5.

Brugge double chance and over 1.5 goals therefore looks a strong combination here.

FC Porto vs Manchester City - Erling Haaland to Score (4/5)

Erling Haaland has made exactly the start City and Enzo Maresca would have wanted this term, scoring three times in their opening three league games, and he looks a strong bet to carry that form into Europe.

The Norwegian has netted 34 times in 39 European appearances for the Cityzens and now sits just two short of Sergio Aguero’s club record in the Champions League.

Porto have been difficult to break down so far this season, but this is comfortably their toughest test yet. City’s away games in this competition tend to produce plenty of goals, and most of their best chances should once again fall Haaland’s way.

Liverpool vs Atletico Madrid - Both Teams to Score & Over 2.5 Goals (17/20)

Liverpool kept their first clean sheet of the campaign at Ipswich on Friday night, but it wasn’t a quiet evening for goalkeeper Alisson Becker against the newly promoted side.

The Brazilian made five saves to keep the Tractor Boys at bay, and while it was a better performance from the Reds, there’s still a sense that stronger teams can punish their unbalanced midfield and defensive setup.

Atlético Madrid’s Champions League games averaged 3.94 goals last season. They’re far more expansive than they once were, and Diego Simeone should sense an opportunity to get at Liverpool in transition, just as Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest did.

Liverpool look strong in attack, though, with Cody Gakpo and Alexander Isak hitting form, so goals certainly look like the way in.

Napoli vs Arsenal - Under 2.5 Goals (17/20)

Arsenal could not be better set up for European away tests like this. They conceded just three goals across seven away ties in the competition last season, and it’s no surprise when you see how well organised they are when absorbing pressure.

There’s no reason for them to change that approach here. A low-scoring win or draw would suit them just fine, and they have the defensive quality and discipline to achieve it.

Manchester United vs Sabah Baku - Man Utd -2.5 Handicap (4/5)

Sabah Baku were founded only in 2017 and are already Azerbaijani champions, having claimed their first league title last season. This is their Champions League debut, secured after overturning a first-leg defeat to beat Hapoel Be’er Sheva 6-4 on aggregate.

This is a tough opening assignment for Sabah at Old Trafford. It hasn’t been a perfect start to the season for Michael Carrick’s side, but they racked up the goals against Ipswich in their only home outing so far, and I’d expect them to do the same here.
