Hull City 2026/27 Betting Preview

Hull City achieved promotion to the Premier League via the play-offs, edging out Middlesbrough in the final at Wembley. However, as the bookmakers firm favourites to be relegated and finish in last place, is there an alternative scenario that could play out for the Tigers?

Team analysis

Having arrived through the play-offs, Hull City finished way behind both Coventry City and Ipswich Town, and this is why the bookmakers have little faith that this team can stay up. They only had the 8th best home record in the Championship, and that will need to improve if they are to get anywhere near the magic 35-40 mark this campaign.

If Hull are to prove competitive they needed to upgrade their squad. And while seven new players have linked up with the current crop of players, Hull City fans will know more faces are required if they are to avoid relegation.

Their biggest signing thus far has been Olympiacos' goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis for just shy of £20m. The 23-year-old kept 17 league clean sheets last campaign in Greece, and Hull have clearly recognised a key area of their team that needed addressing. Hull have also signed Jack Butland as back up from Rangers for £3m.

Hull's next most expensive signing was Jens Hjerto-Dahl from Tromso for £8.5m. The 20-year-old midfielder has scored seven goals in 14 appearances in 2026, and he is certainly a player who looks to have a big future ahead of him, especially with more eyes now on him in the Premier League.

Elliot Stroud has signed from Swedish club Mjallby, while Oscar Zambrano returns to the club who had previously arrived on loan but was unable to play after a drug ban. The Ecuadorian, however, has been touted as a special player, and he will required in the middle of the park to break up attacks.

Newcastle's Matt Targett and Sporting's Hidemasa Morita arrive on free deals, as Hull look to do some clever deals and not burn through all of their cash just for the sake of it.

Hull have certainly added experience and young promising players to their squad, but is it enough to keep them out of the bottom three? Time will tell, but they still appear to be a little short.

Key players

Hull City have one player they will need more than anyone. That man is Oliver McBurnie. The 30-year-old scored 18 goals and provided seven assists in his 40 league appearances last campaign - his best since the 18/19 season with Swansea - but having previously struggled with Las Palmas in La Liga, the step up might just catch him out.

However, his experience will be called upon, and McBurnie knows how to upset an opposition defence. His goals in the Championship are why they are here, and he will need to continue finding the back of the net if Hull are to stay up.

Last season, Hull also had Joe Gelhardt, who chipped in with 19 goal contributions. However, the 24-year-old has been snapped up by Leeds and his absence will be a huge blow for the club this campaign.

Season prediction

Hull City are odds-on favourites to be relegated and it's hard to argue with that. Their squad does not look ready to compete at this level, but their 1/3 price is far too short to back.

However, Hull are as big as 5/4 to finish bottom, and that has caught my eye. There are no other clubs that are as bad as Hull in the Premier League, and the calibre of players that have been brought in don't improve them enough to be competitive.

It looks as though it is going to be a long, hard season for Hull fans, but their price to finish bottom is jus too good to ignore. For me, it should be no bigger than evens.
