The former player now has his first full season at the helm and with new faces arriving at Old Trafford, fans are confident that their beloved Red Devils can kick on and challenge for the title.

Team analysis

There’s no doubt that Michael Carrick has revived Man United and their excellent run under their former player has firmly brought them back into conversation.

After joining on 13th January, Carrick has gone on to win 12 of his 17 matches across all competitions, losing just twice, and the return of Champions League football to Old Trafford has certainly lifted the mood around the camp.

But in order to close the gap, Man United must strengthen his squad, especially returning to European football and a demanding fixture list starting as early as September.

There’s plenty of talent already within the squad that has flourished under their new head coach, in particular Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko, but fans will know they need more quality before silverware returns to Old Trafford.

This season, Man United will be looking to bridge the gap with rivals Man City and Arsenal - but it’s going to be a tall order. The World Cup may have stalled progress when it comes to transfers, and Carrick is up against it to make sure his squad is ready for the early rounds.

Key players

Carrick has managed to get players in despite the demand for more. He has clearly looked to strengthen his midfield during the off-season and has turned to two tried and tested Premier League midfielders.

Youri Tielemans signed from Aston Villa while Chelsea’s Andrey Santos has been brought in to add extra competition for places with Man United now having to balance the Champions League.

While Tielemans’ signature was unexpected amongst the fans, the Belgian international can operate in several roles for Carrick, and has consistently proven to be a top performer at this level.

But while there is a desperate urge to improve the squad, there's plenty of talent within it that can help Man United achieve their goals this campaign. Bruno Fernandes is the obvious starting point. The Portugusee maestro scored nine Premier League goals last season but even more impressively he contributed 21 assists. Kobbie Maino remains only 21 but continues to get chances under Carrick, while key defensive players including Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw remain invaluable at the back.

More players are needed, but Carrick achieved what he did because of the players currently at the club, and fans are often quick to forget that when the window opens.

Season prediction

Despite significant progress under Carrick last term, Man United are still as big as 9/1 to win the Premier League this time round. To go from failing to win a trophy to securing the league title would take some doing, and the Red Devils without doubt still need a few more faces through the door before they can be brought into that particular conversation.

However, a bet that did stand out was Bryan Mbuemo to be their top goalscorer at 7/4. The Cameroon international bagged 11 in 33 Premier League appearances last season, two more than Bruno Fernandes in two less appearances. Carrick loved him, and no doubt will relish starting the former Brentford man again. With Fernandes eagle-eyed in behind, providing assists left, right and centre, Mbuemo will receive plenty of top quality service.

Away from individual betting, Man United are odds-on at 8/13 to finish in the top four - and it’s a little too short for me to advise. Chelsea don’t have European football to focus on and have added 10 players this window. Aston Villa will also have their say at much bigger odds (4/1) and that skinny price on Carrick’s incomplete squad doesn’t appeal.
