When the Saudi-backed takeover happened in 2021, fans were incredibly optimistic about the future. Fast forward five years, and that dream looks to be coming to an abrupt end.

Eddie Howe resigned a few weeks before the season started, after watching three of his best players vacate the club. Fans were shocked and angry that it happened so close to the start of the new Premier League season.

Joining him out the door were Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes who all moved on, leaving extremely big holes to fill. But it’s the manager who fans will arguably miss the most.

The board, however, moved quickly to appoint Al Ahli’s Matthias Jaissle, who has won back-to-back AFC Champions League titles over the last two seasons. Previously at Salzburg, the German won back-to-back Austrian Bundesliga titles in 2022 and 2023. It’s a strong appointment, but the 38-year-old doesn’t have long with his squad before the season starts - and he has big shoes to fill.

Yet this is a man that knows how to win football matches and more importantly, trophies. Despite his young age, the German has achieved plenty within the game already, and he looks ready to take on a task within the Premier League. If the fans warm to him, he could be the ideal replacement for Howe - but he can’t afford to lose any more key players before the window shuts.

No matter how strong his credentials are, he's walking in to a huge job, with high expectations, while their current squad doesn't look capable of delivering a big season.

Key players

Although there have been three major exits at the club, Newcastle have still splashed the cash and brought in no less than five new signings.

Hoffenheim’s Bazoumana Toure has arrived on a £42m deal, while Monaco’s Aladji Bamba was another player picked up for over £30m. The two young midfielders will look to help reshape Newcastle’s starting XI, with the help of Braga’s goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek and Ajax’s Sean Steur.

The club is clearly looking to build long term and potentially profit down the line - but how will these young faces deal with the pressure of the Premier League?

Senior players including Joelinton, Harvey Barnes and Nick Woltemade are all going to have to step up this season. The same goes for Anthony Elanga who has failed to impress since his move from Nottingham Forest.

But there’s no doubt that they are particularly light in the middle of the park - at least when it comes to experience - and no doubt Jaissle will be looking to bolster his back line as quickly as possible. If he doesn’t, Newcastle could be in for a slow start to the season.

Season prediction

As mentioned at the top of this article, predicting what Newcastle will - or won’t - achieve this season is difficult at this stage. It’s easy to see why certain punters are jumping on the relegation bandwagon at big prices, but their managerial appointment has convinced me otherwise.

Would I rush to back them to therefore finish in the top 10 at 11/10? The answer is once again no. They are as short as 4/6 to finish in the bottom half, and the bookmakers have priced this perfectly.

Newcastle are going to struggle at times this season - perhaps at the start. But relegation at 9/1 would be a huge shock.

For those looking for a team top goalscorer bet, it’s easy to back Yoane Wissa at 11/8, but Woltemade at 11/2 could offer value.

The German may well build on his eight goals last season now one of the more senior players and time and time again we see foreign players come over and perform much stronger after a year when they’ve settled - 11/2 seems a little too big in this market.
