Fulham welcome Arsenal to Craven Cottage on New Years Eve, as the Premier League season ticks over the halfway point. Both sides come into this one in questionable form, with the Gunners in need of a win to reignite their title ambitions.
Marco Silva’s Cottagers will be looking to turn the tide again after an up-and-down December. After starting the month with a spirited 4-3 defeat at Anfield, they recorded back-to-back home 5-0 wins and secured themselves a spot in the Carabao Cup semi-finals. However, in the league, their last three games have seen eight conceded, zero scored, including a painful 2-0 defeat at home to Burnley.
Whilst the West London side will remain without Tim Ream and Adama Traore, they will be delighted to welcome back Raul Jimenez from suspension, after a freak red-card in their 3-0 defeat to Newcastle. The Mexican striker has notched 3 goals in 2 games before his dismissal at St James’ Park and will look to pick up where he left off in front of goal this Sunday. His manager and teammates will be looking to him to do just that, as during his suspension, Fulham haven’t scored a goal.
Having missed the chance to go top against West Ham, Mikel Arteta’s Gunners’ will be full of motivation to right wrong’s and prove why they are making a strong case to be champions. Thursday’s 2-0 home defeat to the Hammers summed up Arsenal’s performances of late, as the red side of North London have failed to look convincing in their last few fixtures. Just one win in their last five in all competitions, with Thursday’s defeat only piling on the pressure with teams around them hot on their heels.
Arsenal’s injury list going into this game contains Jurrien Timber, Takehiro Tomiyasu, Fabio Vieira and Thomas Partey, however Arteta can welcome back Kai Havertz, who missed the home defeat to West Ham through suspension.
Despite having goals in a plethora of positions, Arsenal’s leading league goalscorer this term is still Eddie Nketiah, who has struggled for minutes recently. His last goal in the league came in October, when he notched a hat-trick in a comprehensive 5-0 win over Sheffield United. With Gabriel Jesus missing multiple opportunities in their last outing, Arteta may look to give Nketiah a shot against Fulham, in an attempt to spark fresh life into a stumbling squad.
Fulham and Arsenal met at the Emirates early in the season, with a particularly surprising outcome, as the sides played out an entertaining 2-2 draw. Fulham took a very early lead through Andreas Pereira, before two quick Arsenal goals through Bukayo Saka and Nketiah in the second-half seemed to have their side in control. Despite a second-yellow card for Calvin Bassey, Fulham managed to find an equaliser through Joao Palhinha and claimed a vital point.
However, in other previous meetings, Fulham have not faired so well against North London’s Reds. In the Premier League, they’ve only managed to avoid defeat six times in 33 attempts, winning three and drawing three. All three of those wins however, have come at Craven Cottage, so that may give Fulham supporters a glimmer of hope ahead of this one. Arsenal therefore have won 27 times against the Cottagers and they’ll be out for number 28, especially after the draw early on in the season.
In the statistical highlights, we will look at recent trends between the sides, including Arsenal's recent dominance over Fulham, and Artetas' superiority over his opposite number.
With Fulham’s form having dipped and Arsenal with a score to settle and a point to prove, I feel like an Arsenal win is the likely outcome this weekend.
On the back of a demoralising defeat, Mikel Arteta’s men will look to pile on the pressure already on Marco Silva’s Fulham side and aim to get their league campaign back on track. With their excellent Craven Cottage record, the Gunners will look to win convincingly and send a statement to the rest of the teams in the hunt to be in pole position come the end of this Premier League season.
