It’s time for another horses to follow article! In fact, we are long overdue. We haven’t had one since July, which was one of my final articles before my lengthy hospitalisation. However, I went out with a bang as that article included the Bunbury Cup winner, Aalto, and the John Smith's Cup winner, Raammee. Incidentally, the latter went on to win another Heritage Handicap in August, and is now rated 15lb higher at 110. Hopefully this latest batch of horses to follow will enjoy similar success.
If you’re new to my content, I’m RacingGav, the resident horse racing expert here at Betting.co.uk. I publish free horse racing tips every week, which include daily selections, antepost picks and a Lucky 15 covering the ITV Racing action on Saturdays. Beyond tipping, I also post educational guides and big race trends, plus horses and trainers to follow.
Speaking of the latter, this article gives you horses to follow this month, and the accompanying article with trainers to follow in November is already live. The trainers I talked about in the October version produced 54 winners between them, and hopefully the November edition will highlight more high-performing trainers too.
We don’t need to worry about the best horse racing odds today, as there are no betting tips in this article. However, it is worth knowing about Bwin. This brand appears in our Top 15 bookmaker list, and comes highly recommended. Bwin has a tasty sign up offer for new customers too. If you bet £5 on sports, you’ll get £20 in free bets.. If you’re not already a Bwin customer, be sure to check them outAlthough Betsuna is new, it’s licensed and regulated in Great Britain by the UK Gambling Commission, so everything is above board.
As my long term readers will know, although I cover both Flat and National Hunt racing here, I’m a Jumps man at heart. As such, I was absolutely buzzing to see the return of the National Hunt season last month, and the action looks set to heat up further during November. Below are five horses I can’t wait to see on the track this month, my reasons for choosing them, and where I expect to see them perform.
Looking back at last season, it would be hard to say that Alexei wasn’t one of the stars. He started his campaign at Chepstow in the Welsh Champion Hurdle, off a mark of just 127. Chasing the well-supported Celtic Dino that day, Alexei looked one to keep onside. That proved right, as he went on to win competitive Handicaps at Ascot and Cheltenham on his next two starts, which saw him shoot up in the handicap to a mark of 147.
He tried to defy top weight at Ascot when looking to land a hat-trick of Handicaps, but that proved a step too far, as he finished third. Even that was a fantastic performance though in the circumstances. Joe Tizzard freshened him up with a 56-day break before stepping into Grade 2 company and winning the Kingwell Hurdle at Wincanton. He moved straight up to Grade 1s, and managed a fourth place in the Champion Hurdle, then came third in the Aintree Hurdle.
I feel he was unlucky not to finish closer in the Champion Hurdle. A mistake at the last potentially cost him a top three finish, or better. Nonetheless he had a huge season, starting on 127 and ending on 158, which is 31lb worth of improvement! As he is only six years old, there could even be more improvement to come, and I have already tipped him for the 2027 Champion Hurdle. He starts his 2026/27 campaign in the Grade 2 Molyneux Hurdle (formerly The Elite Hurdle). That race takes place at Aintree on Saturday 7 November 2026 and with Harry Cobden booked to ride, I think he will take some beating.
My second horse fits a similar mould to Alexei. He is another horse who improved dramatically during the 2025/26 season, and I feel he will continue that progression through the 2026/27 season. The horse in question is Meetmebythesea, who is trained by Ben Pauling, and owned by JP McManus. His Hurdling campaign last season saw him record three wins and one place, to achieve a rating of 133.
Last season he made the switch to fences, winning twice over inadequate trips of 1m 7f at Wetherby, and 2m 0.5f at Ayr, with both races on going that was softer than ideal. Ben Pauling then tried him in the Grade 2 Game Spirit Chase at Newbury, which was a big ask, especially with Lulamba lining up. Despite being by beaten 51 lengths that day, it was all valuable experience for him. After that he went to the Grade 2 Jack Richards Novices’ Limited Handicap Chase, with the step up in trip and better going that he had been crying out for. He nearly made all, winning in fantastic style and pushing his handicap mark up to 151.
While Meetmebythesea has gone up 18lb since his Chase debut, I think he still has more to come. He is a lightly raced horse, and almost entirely unexposed over intermediate trips. I was at Ben Pauling’s impressive Naunton Down stables in August, at which point he hoped Meetmebythesea would go for the Paddy Power Gold Cup Handicap Chase (Saturday 14 November) before progressing to the Grade 2 Peterborough Chase, and ultimately the Grade 1 Ryanair Chase at the 2027 Cheltenham Festival. Ben has high hopes for Meetmebythesea, which I share, and I have already tipped him for the Ryanair Chase.
My third horse to follow is Idaho Sun for Harry Fry. He has had a fantastic career to date, with five wins from six races. He started his career under Rules with two Bumper wins, before tackling the Champion Bumper at Cheltenham, where he was only beaten by 6.5 lengths, a fantastic effort in defeat. Last season Idaho Sun switched from Bumpers to Hurdles, where he hold a perfect three from three record.
First time out last season he won a Maiden Hurdle at Fontwell in October, before winning a Novice Hurdle at Bangor-On-Dee. Then Harry Fry pitched him in the deep end, by running him in the Grade 1 Formby Novices’ Hurdle at Aintree. He ran superbly, beating all before him, including Dan Skelton's highly-regarded Mydaddypaddy.
We didn’t see Idaho Sun again after December last year due to a setback. However, in more positive news that beating of Mydaddypaddy off level weights reads particularly well now given that Idaho Sun is currently rated 142 and Mydaddypaddy who went on to finish third in the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle at the 2026 Cheltenham Festival and is now rated 153. Off a potentially very lenient mark of 142, Harry Fry sends him straight to the Greatwood Hurdle on Sunday 15 November 2026. He could be absolutely thrown in off that mark and he could put himself into the Champion Hurdle picture with a big performance, especially with it being a weak division at present.
My fourth horse to follow in November is one called Salver who is trained by Jamie Moore & Josh Moore. He had a fantastic opening season for the Moore’s back in 2023/24, where he won four Hurdle races in a row before finishing third in the Triumph Hurdle behind two subsequent Grade 1 winners in Majborough and Kargese. On his switch from Juvenile to Open company, he was unlucky not to win in the 2024/25 season, beaten just half a length in a top Handicap at Windsor and then by a head in a Grade 2 at Sandown.
Last season, Salver made the switch to fences, winning two Grade 2s in his opening four runs over the bigger obstacles and only being beaten 5.5 lengths in the Grade 1 Kauto Star Novices' Chase at Kempton over Christmas. He then tackled the Grade 1 Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase at the 2026 Cheltenham Festival. He was third past the post that day, behind Kitzbuhel and Final Demand but he was subsequently promoted to second after Final Demand was disqualified due to a banned substance. He backed up that form by finishing third in the Grade 1 Mildmay Novices’ Chase at Aintree the following month.
Ultimately, Salver will be seen at his best with softer ground conditions. Therefore, his form last season, largely on faster ground can be marked up. I’m led to believe his early season target is the Betfair Chase on 21 November 2026, despite also having entries at Cheltenham the weekend prior and in the Coral Gold Cup at Newbury the week after. If the rain comes and we were to get the testing ground that Haydock is famous for, Salver could be in his element. With a recent run on the Flat at Nottingham (which I’d ignore form wise), he’ll be race fit at Haydock against some rivals having their first run and I wouldn’t be surprised if he caused an upset there. To be winning that Grade 1 though, he does need the going to be Soft at the very least.
Last but certainly not least, we have the Jamie Snowden-trained Wendigo, who completes my five to follow in November 2026. Wendigo was a dual Bumper winner and ended up being a dual Hurdle winner too. He was also a very solid fifth in the 2025 renewal of the Grade 1 Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival. All of this would have been a bonus for his connections though, as he always looked like a Staying Chaser in the making.
Last season, he took to fences exceptionally well as expected. He was beaten just a head by Wade Out on chasing debut at Worcester, before winning the Grade 2 John Francome Novices’ Chase at Newbury on his second start. What makes it all the more impressive is that both runs came over 2m 4f, which is on the sharp side for him. He placed in the Grade 1 Kauto Star Novices' Chase , one place ahead of the aforementioned Salver. He then went on to win again at Ayr before falling late on in the Grade 1 Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase at Cheltenham, when running a big race. His subsequent poor performance at Aintree is easy to forgive on the back of a tough campaign and the fall.
After a 205-day break and the abandonment of his initial comeback target of the Old Roan Chase, Wendigo was sent up to Carlisle for the Colin Park Memorial Intermediate Chase (Listed). Racing over an inadequate trip of 2m 4f, on Good going, (wants softer) and a right-handed track (arguably better running left-handed), it looked a tough task. Even more so as he gave 10lb to Potters Charm, who is rated 6lb higher. However, he won in great style, and he will head to the Coral Gold Cup at Newbury on 28 November 2026. Even if that Potters Charm form isn’t rock solid, as I don’t believe he enjoys chasing, the handicapper has left Wendigo alone on 147. With improvement to come for the run, the step up in trip, the softer ground (hopefully) and the return to a left handed track, he could have enough improvement up his sleeve to win again.
Whilst I’m not specifically tipping these five horses in their races this month, I still think all five have a fantastic chance of winning their respective races. All five are worth following both on their next start and for the season ahead. I’d be confident that at least some of them will win their November targets but I’d be near certain they will produce plenty of wins between them during the season ahead.
On the negative side, it is worth noting that none of these are easy races to win. In the graded action, Alexei faces Mydaddypaddy who currently sits second to Lossiemouth in the Champion Hurdle market and Salver faces reigning Betfair Chase champion - Grey Dawning, who won’t be easy to beat. Meetmebythesea, Idaho Sun and Wendigo all then run in exceptionally deep and competitive handicaps.
I’d also be cautious ground wise with Salver and Wendigo especially, I’d like to see plenty of rain for them both. In contrast, I’d prefer to see a drier forecast for Meetmebythesea who absolutely bounced off the decent ground at Cheltenham when last seen. The remaining two - Idaho Sun and Alexei are pretty versatile with wins on various different types of ground. I hope you enjoy following these five horses through November and hopefully we start December’s article looking back on the great success they achieved.
