There is some fantastic action at racing HQ (Newmarket) today, and the first five races on the card are either Listed, Group 3, or Group 2 level. However, it’s the final race of the day that interests me, which is a 1m 1f Class 3 Handicap. Interestingly, this is the

Handicap race you’ll see at Newmarket today, and I have found an equally interesting contender.

Flying Frontier’s last win was back in July 2025, but I believe he is ready to redeem himself today. In this article, I’ll break down my reasons for thinking that.
Flying Frontier was an eye-catcher last time out
Given his hold up tactics, Flying Frontier’s results are driven by how any given race pans out. He needs plenty of horses to tuck in behind, but also needs gaps to open when he wants them.
Last time out at Doncaster Flying Frontier placed seventh. He blew the start and lost valuable ground before the race had really begun. He repeatedly ran into trouble and needed to switch several times. However, he persevered and stayed on strongly, which is what caught my eye.
He was the yard’s second string that day, and he was sent off at 20/1. Their first string horse, City Of Poets, was sent off at a quarter of that price and came second. Somehow I just wonder how much they really wanted Flying Frontier to win…
Flying Frontier is now 7lb below his last winning mark
Dropped 2lb for his Doncaster performance, Flying Frontier is now down to a mark of 88, which is 7lb below his last winning mark of 95. All of his previous wins have been on Good, or Good to Firm going, so the current ground conditions will suit.
Also, he has been running in Class 2 Handicaps since September 2023, so this drop in grade to Class 3 0-90 Handicap will be a huge help. Although he hasn’t raced at Newmarket before, the long straight with a stiff uphill finish, should be right up his street.
Although he is usually seen over 1m 2f, if he can be held up behind horses for as long as possible, and then delivered as they tackle the rising ground, he should still finish with a flourish over this 1m 1f trip today.
Rossa Ryan has a great strike rate for for James Tate
James Tate has booked Rossa Ryan to ride Flying Frontier today, and I like that a lot. Rossa Ryan is 33/155 (21%) when riding for James Tate with 93/155 (60%) finishing in the first four. To a ÂŁ1 level stake, he is operating at a profit of +ÂŁ10.00, which is rather remarkable after 155 rides for the trainer.
If you limit his record to Flying Frontier only, he is 1/2 (50%). Not only that, Rossa Ryan rode the winner of this race last year, which was Man Of La Mancha for Ralph Beckett, so he knows exactly what it takes to win and how to get the job done.
Can Flying Frontier give them weight and a beating?
As you can see, there are many positives for Flying Frontier today. With the drop to a mark of 88, he is 7lb below his last winning mark He also drops in grade to a Class 3 (0-90) Handicap, which is his easiest task for some time. The track, trip and going should all suit him, especially as he is likely to get a solid gallop to aim at. Last but not least, I like that Rossa Ryan is riding, given that he has won on Flying Frontier previously and he has a very strong record for James Tate.
In terms of negatives, Flying Frontier is a horse that needs everything to fall in place for him. Too slow a pace, or a busy finish with limited gaps, could see his chance gone. He will also need to break better from the stalls today. Facts considered, I think Flying Frontier is worth a go at 15/2. But given the concerns raised, I’m trimming the stake down to 0.75pt each way.
