If you’re a regular reader you'll know the score by now. It’s Saturday which means it’s Lucky 15 time! For those of you new to my content here, each Saturday I put up a Lucky 15 for the ITV Racing action and this week that comes from York and Newmarket!
I publish free horse racing tips every week which can be daily betting tips or antepost selections. Away from tipping content, I also produce educational guides, big race trends and also both horses and trainers to follow.
On the topic of the latter, be sure to check out my selection of National Hunt trainers to follow in October 2026 which was published earlier this week. If you’re looking to have a bet at the Welsh Racing Festival, the data in that article will be a huge help!
I’ll often select my bookmaker recommendation based on the best horse racing odds for the bet. However, we’re changing it around for this article. For the four horses you can get combined odds as high as 9,632/1. At that price though, you are only getting 3, 5, 5 and 5 places respectively. bet365 are far superior with their place terms on offer with 4, 5, 6 and 6 being paid. On an Each Way Lucky 15 bet, these places are well worth taking! The value doesn’t end there either, as they have a superb welcome offer. If you bet £10, you’ll get £30 in free bets. Consistent value like this makes bet365 an excellent choice.
We have a great mix of selections in this week’s Lucky 15 with two rock solid chances at 9/2 and 5/1 plus two riskier selections at 12/1 and 16/1. In the rest of the article, I’ll break down my reasons for selecting each of these horses.
Today’s opening selection is Richard Hannon's Cut A Dash, who is ridden by Sean Levey. He kicked off his career by winning readily in a valuable Class 2 Novice Stakes here at York, so he already has course form. His subsequent four starts were all in Group 2 or Group 3 races. Although he has run well in defeat, such as when he was beaten by just a length in the Group 2 Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot, he is yet to record a second victory.
As well as that run, he impressed me last time out in the Group 2 Mill Reef at Newbury. He raced at the rear of the field and made solid headway towards the business end. However, Jamie Spencer saw the race was gone and looked after him with a hands and heels ride. Even still, he was only beaten three lengths.
I think this drop down to Listed company will see him return to winning ways. As one of just two horses in the lineup with a three-figure rating, I don’t think he needs much improvement to win this race. The top rated horse is Agamemnon, but he is more exposed with seven starts, compared to five for Cut A Dash, and he also needs to bounce back from a lesser effort over 5f last time out.
Our second selection is also ridden by Sean Levey but this horse is trained by Alan King. I think the return to York is a huge plus for Insanity, as his two runs here last year produced fantastic performances.
He was second to Asgard’s Captain in August of last year, who has won three more races since. Then in October, he came here for last year’s renewal of this same race and was only denied by half a length.
Those two performances came off handicap marks of 97 and 99, producing RPRs of 104 and 106. He now returns off a mark of 97, 2lb below his mark in this race last year. If the return to York sparks a return to form, he must have a far better chance than his 12/1 odds suggest.
At the beginning of 2026, Apollo One was rated 105 and at his peak in June last year, he was rated as high as 109. Since January, his handicap mark has plummeted by 17lb to just 88 despite running multiple strong races in defeat.
As recently as May this year, he was rated 10lb higher than he is now and he still finished a solid third that day. However, it's his last two runs that particularly caught my eye. The first was here at York over 5.5f, where he flew home from deep in the field, but was beaten into fourth by just 3.25 lengths. His latest race was in the Portland Handicap at Doncaster, where he was severely hampered and ran far better than the results suggest.
As a result of his falling mark, he slips into this handicap off bottom weight of 8st 10lb, which is fantastic. If he entered today’s race at the start of the season, he would have been carrying top weight of 9st 12lb. He deserves a better race today, and with the required luck in-running, I think he’ll run a huge race.
The final selection for this week’s Lucky 15 runs in the Cesarewitch Handicap at Newmarket. This race sees 29 runners compete over a gruelling 2m 2f trip as they challenge for a prize fund of £175,000.
In last year’s renewal of this race, two horses came to the fore, Beylerbeyi and Dawn Rising. I tipped the former that day and he obliged. Both are back for another crack at the race and fill the top two spots in the market.
The big difference this time is that Dawn Rising appears to have been laid out for this race, and he returns off the same mark. However, it's a very different story for Beylerbeyi. He has been campaigned aggressively and consequently returns off a 10lb higher mark. I love Beylerbeyi, but it will hard for him to beat Dawn Rising today. The latter has a 10lb swing at the weights, a much kinder draw in stall five, and sees Joseph O’Brien, JP McManus and Ryan Moore join forces. What a trio!
I’ll be disappointed if any of these horses fail to hit the frame, and I actually think all four could win them. As the odds suggest, there is a little more faith required with Insanity and Apollo One, but Cut A Dash and Dawn Rising both look to have a rock solid chance.
Cut A Dash needs to show his class with the drop to Listed company. Insanity needs to rediscover his form on this return to York. Apollo One needs to get some luck in-running. Then finally, Dawn Rising just needs to repeat last year’s performance.
As covered already, I feel the extra places on offer with bet365 makes them the right choice for this week’s Lucky 15. But the prices are more than sufficient to provide a healthy return anyway. I’ll happily take four places, but in order to land the full house, you have to be in it to win it, so let’s have a go!
