We enjoyed a profitable
Lucky 15 last week, with Persica winning at 5/1, and Two Tribes and Stressfree hitting the places at 11/2 and 7/1 respectively. The day was further enhanced when my antepost selection, Big Mojo, placed in the Sprint Cup Stakes at Haydock at 14/1 (9/1 SP). Hopefully we can carry that form into this weekend’s bet!

Three each way contenders and one favourite!
Three of today’s selections are priced at 5/1, 13/2 and 14/1, all of which are perfect for an each way bet. However, I have also included a 2/1 favourite that I’m really sweet on. I think he’ll win his race, but I’ll certainly be shocked if he doesn’t come home in the first three. In the remainder of this article, I’ll tell you more about all four horses, and tell you why I’ve chosen them today.
Spirit Mixer @ 5/1 - He goes for a hat-trick in this race!
I’d say that Spirit Mixer’s far from appealing recent form can be ignored, as this race is surely part of a long term plan for him! If you look back at his form in this race, Spirit Mixer won it in both 2024 and 2025, so he is attempting to land a hat-trick in this year’s renewal. Last year’s win came off a 1lb higher mark, and the year before he raced off 4lb lower.
He doesn’t have the best draw in Stall 12, but jockey Alfie Redman claims 7lb. That brings Spirit Mixer’s allocated 9st 4lb down to just 8st 11lb. Alfie has a strong record this year for Andrew Balding, with 3 wins (18%) and 6 places (53%) from 17 starts. If you had backed all of his rides for this trainer to a £1 level stake, you would have a profit of +£8.00.
Apollo One @ 13/2 - This horse is incredibly well handicapped!
Apollo One has finished second in this race for the last two years. Those two second places were off handicap marks of 103 and 102, but he returns for a third time today off a mark of just 90. He hinted at a return to top form last time out, when he came fourth at the Ebor Festival, staying on late in the race. As such, the 1lb drop looks generous, and he could be coming to the boil at the right time, most likely by design!
Last year’s winner, Eternal Sunshine, must be respected but the 4lb increase she received for winning last time out could stop her. Especially as Apollo One is now 16lb better off than he was for last year’s renewal. Similarly, Air Force One beat Apollo One last time out at York, but there is now an 8lb swing in the weights!
Enceladus @ 2/1 - This progressive colt will take some beating!
At the time of writing, the market suggests that Enceladus is the one to back for this year’s St Leger, and I’d agree. I think he will take some beating here, and it would certainly be a shock if he was out of the first three, making him an ideal for some leverage in this week’s Lucky 15.
Enceladus is progressing with every run, albeit at lower levels than today’s Classic race, but he could deliver at the first time of asking. The fact that he has only had three runs, compared to the five races his two main market rivals have run could be crucial. With his fresher legs and a less-exposed profile, he can see Joseph O’Brien deny his father Aiden another win in this prestigious race. With the step up in trip expected to bring more improvement and first time cheekpieces going on, I think Enceladus is the answer to this fascinating contest!
Checkandchallenge @ 14/1 - He can bounce back from the misfortune of last time!
The last time Checkandchallenge ran it was a real sickener. His race was on
Day 2 of the York Ebor Festival, and I put him up as my daily betting tip. The article from that day explains the reasoning behind that bet in more depth.
I was not alone in fancying his chances that day, with his price halving from the 20/1 advised to a 10/1 SP, with the majority of the money coming near to the off. Sadly, there was an issue with his blindfold being removed as the stalls opened, resulting in him losing many lengths. Consequently, his race was over before it began.
It’s a slight concern that the official going description is Good, Good to Soft in places, as I’d prefer more juice in the ground for him. However, he is a pretty versatile type, and at odds of 14/1, I’m prepared to chance him on this ground. He deserves a better race today, and hopefully a win.
Will it be another profitable Lucky 15?
As mentioned briefly already, last Saturday’s Lucky 15 brought us a profit, with one winner and two places from the four selections. If anything, the four horses I’ve chosen today have every chance of bettering that result. Hopefully they can justify my confidence in them.
I believe two of these races have been long term targets for Spirit Mixer and Apollo One, both of whom are handicapped to strike. We then have the progressive Enceladus, who can see Joseph O’Brien deny his father, Aiden O’Brien, a fourth straight victory in this Classic.
Last but not least, we have Checkandchallenge who looks ready to set the record straight after suffering such bad luck last time out. He has the ability to strike off his current mark, and he really deserves to.
