After months of competitive racing, it all comes down to this, British Champions Day at Ascot. Seven races, five of which are Group 1 contests. This is quite simply where legends are made and I have four at each way prices for you.
If you’re just discovering my content here today, welcome! I produce free horse racing tips several times per week for Betting.co.uk as their resident horse racing expert. These are primarily daily betting tips but are also made up of antepost selections and Lucky 15s such as this one. There is also a variety of non-betting content too, such as horses and trainers to follow, big race trends and educational guides.
Speaking of antepost selections, be sure to check out my early selection for the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase at the 2027 Cheltenham Festival. He is currently available at a huge price of 66/1 but with him due to run on Tuesday, that could all change!
As is often the case with Lucky 15s, bet365 steals the show in terms of value. At the time of writing, they have the best horse racing odds and place terms with 3, 4, 4 and 5 places respectively. There’s also a great welcome offer to consider. If you bet £10, you’ll get £30 in free bets. If you’re not already a bet365 customer, you’re missing out!
The key to successful betting is to back horses that will perform better than their odds suggest, if you do that consistently, you’ll win long term. I think these four horses will do exactly that today and I could see them all hitting the frame, if not even better.
Many people will knock Amiloc in the Long Distance Cup because he is 0/2 over staying trips, however, there is more to the story than the bare figures. His first attempt at the trip came in the Goodwood Cup Stakes in July when he unseated at the start, so we never got to see what he could have offered that day. Then his second attempt came at York in the Lonsdale Cup Stakes where he performed badly, only beating one of his seven rivals home.
I think both runs can be ignored, the former for obvious reasons (unseated early) and the latter because I simply feel that he doesn’t enjoy York. After those two tough runs for differing reasons, they gave him a confidence booster at Salisbury last time out. The form of that is irrelevant really, it just would have done him the world of good mentally. I think he still has every chance of becoming a cup horse over 2m and with a recent win under his belt and first time cheekpieces, I think he’ll outrun his current odds of 14/1!
The British Champions Sprint Stakes has been a graveyard for favourites in recent years with just one favourite winning since 2016 - Kinross in 2022. Therefore whilst Almeraq is the obvious one on paper, you would have to be a brave person to be taking prices around 1/1-11/10 for him. For our Lucky 15 bet and just generally, I’d rather take him on than back him at that price.
The horse I have landed on is his stablemate, Division! Wathnan Racing actually run three here - Division, Kind Of Blue and Paborus and their number one jockey - James Doyle, has opted to ride Division. He had a winless campaign to date but he has had some terrible luck with draws and how races have unfolded for him. Hopefully he has been saving up all of his luck and he gets his big day on British Champions Day here. It’s certainly started kinder than usual with him being drawn in stall 12. If he can replicate his Commonwealth Cup third, where arguably he could have easily won it, he will be involved at the finish here and I feel he’s the biggest danger to the hot favourite.10*963.-+
The script was torn up when Ten Bob Tony came out on top in the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot this year, winning at incredible odds of 50/1. He has since proved that to be no fluke with form figures of 442 in Group 1 company since, with margins of defeat no more than fourlengths. Most recently he had today’s favourite, Gstaad, three lengths behind him in the Qatar Prix du Moulin de Longchamp.
I think Ten Bob Tony relishes this stiff mile and surely this has been a long term target for him since his victory in the Queen Anne Stakes back in June? He does have to give the 3YOs 3lb here but if he turns up at his best, he won’t be far away at the finish. Especially if they adopt similar tactics to the Queen Anne Stakes where Kieran Shoemark delivers him with a late challenge.
I’m a huge fan of Hickory and his partnership with Saffie Osborne has been incredible and a pleasure to watch. On his stable debut back in May 2025, I tipped him to win the Victoria Cup and he obliged at a SP of 22/1. That was off a mark of 86 but he has since recorded victories here off marks of 90, 93 and 95 with the latest just last month.
The two latest victories have been over course and distance. I feared the mark could be beyond him but with such a love for this track and with Saffie Osborne getting such a good tune out of him, I had hoped he could continue to improve and come out on top. It’s very much the same scenario here, he needs another career best but with this track, trip and jockey combination, he may just find one more to land this year’s renewal of the Balmoral Handicap!
If we’re going to land a full house, what a day it would be to do it! As the old saying goes, you have to be in it to win it and we’re having a go! Of course, it’s a big ask for us to land four winners but I could certainly see us landing four places and that would pay handsomely enough.
Amiloc needs to prove he’ll stay two miles, Division has his stablemate to beat, Ten Bob Tony needs to prove the Queen Anne was not a fluke and Hickory needs another career best - However, none of this is beyond the realms of possibility.
At the end of a long season and with such competitive races, I’d rather be playing each way on horses like these four than betting favourites on the nose. Hopefully we can get a few upsets again this year and our four runners can be the ones causing them!
