Saturday offers a fantastic day of televised racing action, courtesy of ITV Racing. The National Hunt season is heating up at Aintree, while the Finale at Doncaster marks the end of the Flat season. I have selected two horses from each of those meetings, which I’ve combined into an each way Lucky 15.
For those who are not regular readers, I’m RacingGav, the resident horse racing expert here at Betting.co.uk. I’ve been here since March 2025 and my main focus is providing free horse racing tips. You’ll find daily betting tips, antepost picks, and a Lucky 15 every Saturday. I’ve already published my main betting tip for today, and you should check that article out when you’re finished here.
At the time of writing, the best horse racing odds are available at bet365, with odds of 13,774/1 for our four horses. In addition, bet365 is offering extra places for two races, making them stand out from rival bookies. As well as the best terms, bet365 also has a great welcome offer for new customers. That might sound like the Numbers Round in Countdown, but it is actually the structure of our Lucky 15 bet today. We have two selections who are near the top of the market, both at 4/1, then two value picks at 18/1 and 28/1. I think this combination is perfect, and in the rest of this article, I’ll explain my reasons for choosing these four horses.
The 2m Handicap Chase at Aintree could be a cracker but I think there are potential holes in two of the top three in the market. Kadastral for Dan and Harry Skelton heads the market but he is making both his seasonal reappearance and chasing debut. I would be surprised if they had him fully wound up for this and inexperience could prove costly against seasoned campaigners. The other is Sans Bruit for Paul Nicholls, who has an awesome record here. However, he tends to do his winning in the Spring rather than the Autumn. At their best, they’ll both be hard to beat but I think if you’re going to beat them, it’ll be today.
The horse I’m taking them and the rest of the field on with is Javert Allen for Jane Williams and Ciaran Gethings. He won his first two starts over fences off marks of 115 and 120. He has since placed off handicap marks of 125, 126 and 128. Whilst he went 0/5 last season, his mark was likely anchoring him and with the handicapper now relenting, he could have a productive season. His return run in this race last year was arguably his best of the season, showing he can run well fresh. Whilst only finishing fourth, the form has worked out exceptionally well with the front three - Mambonumberfive, Highlands Legacy and Glengouly rated 128, 121 and 119 that day, whereas they are now rated 146, 137 and 133 respectively. A repeat of that performance would give Javert Allen every chance here.
In three of the opening four runs this season, Coul Angel hit the crossbar with two seconds and a third off handicap marks of 93, 92 and 94. However, the last twice he has produced wins in valuable handicaps off marks of 95 and 103. With his subsequent hike up to a new rating of 108, he now looks to step up from handicap company to pattern company as he tackles the Wentworth Stakes (Listed Race).
On official ratings, Coul Angel is the one to beat and I agree. Shagraan is second but his best form has always come over 5f rather than the 6f he faces today. Montassib carries the third highest rating but whilst he was a Group 1 winner in 2024, he is eight now and looks past his best. The market weakness for Montassib at the time of writing doesn’t suggest a return to his best is coming. With further improvement likely from Coul Angel as a four-year-old, I think he can land the hat-trick by taking this Listed contest before going on to compete in Group company next season.
Whilst Lihyan can run well fresh, his best form tends to come deeper into the season. Off a near career high mark on his reappearance run at Hexham he shaped promisingly, before finishing sixth of six in the style of a horse who would benefit from the run. He then went to Cheltenham last month for a Pertemps Qualifier but he was never able to get involved from his held up position.
With those two runs under his belt, he should be cherry ripe now in terms of fitness. He has also been dropped 3lb from the handicapper for the two runs so far this season and now sits 2lb below his last winning mark. Whilst his very best form has come at Newbury, he has placed twice here, with both of those runs coming early in the season and off similar marks. He then also ran a solid seventh in a valuable Handicap at the Grand National Festival here in April.
With his lightweight of 10st 6lb reduced down to just 10st 1lb by Benjamin Macey’s 5lb claim, he must hold a chance here. Especially as many of his rivals are having their first runs and could be lacking on the fitness side. With this being a Pertemps Qualifier, his connections will want to finish in the first four, which I’d be happy with and anything more is a bonus.
The final leg of our Lucky 15 bet is Night Breeze, who is a perfect type for an each way Lucky 15. He has a strong strike rate over this distance, and even when he doesn’t win he is typical among the first three home. In fact, Night Breeze has never finished outside of the first five over this trip, which fits nicely with the six places on offer here. Not forgetting to mention his fantastic 28/1 price too!
Rossa Ryan has been booked to ride today, and he has a fantastic record for trainer Ian Williams, with 3/7 (43%) this season, and 9/25 (36%) over the last five years. When limited to horses aged four years or older, those numbers become 2/5 (40%) and 8/18 (44%) respectively. Over the last five years, a ÂŁ1 level stake on all runners would have produced a very healthy profit of +ÂŁ31.00. For Night Breeze specifically, Rossa Ryan has a perfect record of two wins from two rides.
Ian won this race back in 2017 with Saunter Boy. He has had third place finishes in both 2018 and 2024 with Reshoun and Oneforthegutter. Night Breeze is also my main betting tip today, which is already live, and you can read more about him there.
All four of these runners have a question to answer:
I think all four can put on a big performance and hopefully answer these questions in emphatic style. I certainly feel that this quartet have better chances than their current odds suggest, especially the latter two at 18/1 and 28/1. As I often say, I would take four places today as the structure of the bet would still see us land a handsome return. However, I’m very hopeful we’ll hit some winners today, and the dream of a full house is still alive!
