For today’s second article, we stay at British Champions Day for the finale, which is the Balmoral Handicap. Last week I managed to pick out the 20/1 winner of the 29-runner Cesarewitch Handicap at Newmarket and today, I believe I could have unearthed the 20/1 winner of the 20-runner Balmoral Handicap at Ascot.
If you’re just discovering my content here at Betting.co.uk, I’m RacingGav and I’m the resident horse racing expert. I publish a wide range of tipping and non-tipping content with a primary focus on free horse racing tips.
For those not familiar with the set up here, I publish two articles every Saturday. This one is my main bet for today, and the other is a Lucky 15 across the ITV Racing action. Today's Lucky 15 is already live, so be sure to check that out when you're finished reading this article!
At the time of writing, the best horse racing odds of 20/1 for Classic are available at PricedUp. In addition to a fantastic price, they are also offering five places on the race, rather than the traditional four. The third value angle is their welcome offer for new customers. If you bet £20, you’ll get £40 in free bets. If you don’t already have an account, then you should consider opening one.
You don’t need to win every time you place a bet, but you do need to find consistent value to be in profit in the long term. I think Classic is a prime example of a value bet at 20/1, which underestimates him in my opinion. In this article, I’ll explain why I think he will outrun his generous odds.
If I said to pick out Classic’s peak performance, many would opt for the handicap win at Newbury back in May, where he defied a mark of 95. However, I would argue that despite being beaten, his third and fourth produced in his last two runs at Goodwood and Ascot respectively have at least matched, if not exceeded that level of form.
In those two runs mentioned, he has run off higher marks of 99 and 100 with immense credit. He has carried heavier weights of 9st 6lb and 9st 10lb in those two runs and has only been beaten 1.25-1.75 lengths in both. Also in both runs, he was finishing strongly, just failing to get there. We know he can be competitive off this career high mark of 100 and I see no reason why he cannot produce yet another career best in his current form. Especially as I believe the ground could be perfect for him today.
I’m a huge fan of the Jamie Osborne-trained Hickory, and I tipped him in my Discord when he beat Classic last time out. With handicap marks of 95 and 100, Classic was giving Hickory 5lb that day, and he was only beaten by 1.75 lengths. It was also a tough task carrying 9st 10lb too.
Hickory was raised 4lb for that win and now has a handicap mark of 99, while Classic was left alone by the handicapper, and remains on a mark of 100. As a result, Classic now has a 4lb swing at the weights, giving Hickory just 1lb this time and that could see the form reversed.
My final angle on Classic moves away from facts and more into speculation. Sometimes this game is more about reading between the lines, than what’s on paper. I find it interesting that Richard Hannon has two runners in this year’s Balmoral Handicap. The second one being Persica, who is a Group horse with a rating of 114 who hasn’t been seen in a Handicap since 2024.
Perhaps Richard Hannon genuinely believes he has a chance in this race, especially with Toby Moore claiming 7lb. Or maybe the owners just wanted a day out at Ascot for British Champions Day. However, I suspect that Persica is in this race to carry top weight of 10st 2lb, which means all of the other horses go down in weight. That includes his stablemate Classic, who carries a much more manageable 9st 2lb today. I think there are some subtle team tactics in play to give Classic the best chance of winning, and it might just work too.
Last week I managed to select the winner of the 29-runner Cesarewitch Handicap, and this time I’m tackling the 20-runner Balmoral Handicap. What can I say, I clearly like to give myself easy tasks! However, I genuinely believe there is a lot in Classic’s favour today. He is in career-best form and also has a fantastic record at this track. He is weighted to reverse the form with Hickory, who is far shorter in the market at around 8/1. The fact that Classic only needs to carry 9st 2lb is a huge help too, and he has stablemate Persica to thank for that.
In terms of negatives, he has a career-high handicap mark, so it will take a career-best performance to defy it. I also wonder if the track will favour higher draws, which has been the case previously. As such, I would have preferred a higher draw than stall seven given a choice, but it could be worse. There’s also his hold up tactics, which requires luck in running, and that’s far from guaranteed in a field of 20 horses.
With everything taken into consideration, I feel Classic is a good bet at 20/1. I see him priced much shorter for this race and you would be a brave person to lay him at the current odds. However, taking the negatives into account, I’ve trimmed the stake down to 0.75pt each way.
