For today's main betting tip, we head to Ascot for a 2m 1f Handicap Chase worth ÂŁ100,000. Despite racing 7lb out of the Handicap last year, my selection still managed to finish in second place. I think he can go one better this time, and win it for us.
If you like free horse racing tips, you have come to the right place! I’m RacingGav and I have been the resident horse racing expert here since March 2025. Today’s article is a daily betting tip and the majority of my articles will be. However, I also publish antepost selections and a Lucky 15 every Saturday, as well as publishing non-tipping content too!
From one 2m Chase to another, I have an antepost selection already live for the Champion Chase at the 2027 Cheltenham Festival. The 9/2 originally advised has gone, but 4/1 remains available if you shop around!
If you want the best horse racing odds for Gabriel’s Getaway, then William Hill is the place to go. At the time of writing, they are offering 8/1. On top of that great value, they have a generous welcome offer for new customers too. If you bet £10, you’ll get £30 in free bets. The weekend is here, make sure you don’t miss out on this fantastic deal.
Last season Anthony Honeyball won the Badger Beers, the Great Yorkshire Chase, and the Grimthorpe, winning over £140,000 in the process. I think this £100,000 Handicap Chase at Ascot is next on his list of big race wins, and in the rest of this article, I’ll explain why.
In last year’s renewal, Boothill was declared to run with a mark of 160. As a result, Gabriel’s Getaway was forced to run from 7lb out of the Handicap. He was treated as though he was rated 131, when he was only rated 126. As such, he had absolutely no right to be involved at the finish and was consequently sent off at 25/1.
Gabriel’s Getaway struggled in the early stages, and became detached for a bit, but he eventually rejoined the main group. He was slightly hampered three out and not fluent two out, but he ran on strongly, and was denied by less than a length at the line. Frustratingly, Boothill ended up being a non-runner, along with a few other big guns. Frustratingly, with 7lb less to carry, Gabriel’s Getaway would most likely have won that day.
Teddy Blue won the race last year carrying 10st 2lb, the same minimum weight as Gabriel’s Getaway. Teddy Blue now returns off a mark of 144, while Gabriel’s Getaway returns off 120, meaning there is a 24lb swing at the weights. Given the margin of defeat last year was less than a length, that form should be reversed. It’s a similar story with Shakeyatailfeather, who also raced off minimum weight last year. He finished nearly ten lengths back that day, and gives Gabriel’s Getaway 3lb this time.
Vanderpoel heads the market, but he has proven tough to keep healthy. In addition, many of Ben Pauling’s runners needed their first run. Haas Boy is a quirky character that looks out of his depth here. Boothill is attractively handicapped but he’s 11 years old now. Martator carries top weight and that looks a tough ask for him. The rest of the field also have questions to answer, whether that’s high marks, a step up in class, or their age.
To reiterate, Gabriel’s Getaway comes here off a mark of 120 and carries just 10st 4lb. That’s effectively an 11lb lower mark than he ran off here last year, when he was beaten by less than a length. He also proved it was no fluke by running an excellent fourth in a similar race on his next outing. A repeat of either of those performances (both produced a RPR of 133) would see him run a huge race off 120.
The only difference last year was that he had already had a run at Kempton before coming here, so he was 100% race fit. This year however, Anthony Honeyball is sending him here for his first run of the season. Whilst that is a minor consideration, he ran a huge race behind Bad on his reappearance last year, so I won’t make too much fuss about it.
There is certainly a lot in Gabriel’s Getaway’s favour. He ran 7lb out of the Handicap last year and between that and dropping 4lb, he is effectively 11lb better off this. That should be enough to see him reverse the form with Teddy Blue, and maintain the form with Shakeyatailfeather. Gabriel’s Getaway has a fantastic racing weight and we know he can run well fresh.
On the negative side, Gabriel’s Getaway isn’t getting any younger at the age of nine. As such we are gambling on him retaining his ability, and also the possibility he is being lined up for another race altogether. After his two runs here last year, his form tailed off, so we need him to bounce back as he returns from his summer break.
His odds have shortened from 14/1 since I first considered him, but I still think there is plenty of value in the 8/1 currently available. Winning a £100,000 Handicap is never easy, but I think he’ll struggle to find a better opportunity to win one than this. I think he has a superb chance, so it’s a strong 1pt each way stake for me.
