Key Points
  • Today’s betting tip has strong form in this race
  • This horse has the perfect draw for the conditions
  • His feather weight which could be crucial

My selection for the last of this week’s free horse racing tips runs in the 5f Handicap at Haydock. This looks to be a fantastic opportunity for the horse, and hopefully he will oblige!

Are you new here? If so, let me introduce myself. I’m RacingGav, the resident horse racing expert for Betting.co.uk. I write several articles every week, with a focus on daily and antepost betting tips, but I also publish non-betting articles, which include educational guides, and horses/trainers to follow.

In addition, I post a Lucky 15 every Saturday, and today's is already live, so be sure to check that out! Speaking of live articles, I put up an antepost selection for the Group 1 Spring Cup Stakes here at Haydock. The race isn't until 15.40 today, so there's still time to take a look.

Betting advice

  • 16:15 Haydock - Jer Batt @ 5/1 (3 places) - 1pt each way

The best odds are with bet365!

At the time of writing most bookies have Jer Batt priced at 9/2, with a couple showing 4/1. However, bet365 has gone the other way with the best horse racing odds at 5/1 for Jer Batt to win! That is great value, and so is their new customer sign up offer. If you bet £10, you’ll get £30 in free bets. Consistent value as always.

This can be Jer Batt’s year!

As I’ll come onto in the next section, Jer Batt has performed strongly in the last two renewals of this race and I’m hoping it’ll be third time lucky for him! In the following sections, I’ll show you my reasons for backing him in today’s race.

Jer Batt has strong previous form in this race

As mentioned, Jer Batt ran in the last two renewals of this race:

  • 2024 - Second of 10, beaten by ½ length off a mark of 92
  • 2025 - Third of 9, beaten by 5.75 lengths off a mark of 89

Considering he placed in this race in 2024 and 2025, off marks of 92 and 89 respectively, he looks very well treated off a current mark of 80. That is underscored by his win over C&D in August 2024 off a mark of 87.

Jer Batt has the perfect draw for the conditions

Jer Batt ran over C&D yesterday, but he was drawn in Stall 1, completely the wrong place. In fairness to jockey Callum Rodriguez, he tried his best to overcome the draw by making an early move. So aggressive was the move that Callum was given a one day ban for not keeping straight from the stalls, and he was also cautioned for careless riding. Ironically, he still ended up three off the rail and without cover, so it was all in vain.

In complete contrast, Jer Batt has drawn Stall 10 for today’s race, which is perfect, as the near side rail is the place to be. Being drawn on the near side removes the need to move across, which in turn should see Jer Batt conserve his energy. Between the big early move, racing without cover, kicking for home too soon, and carrying a big weight, Jer Batt didn’t stay yesterday, dropping from first to fifth in the final half furlong.

Jer Batt has a feather weight which could be crucial

In yesterday’s Class 4 race Jer Batt ran off a mark of 80, and carried a massive 9st 12lb. In complete contrast, today’s race is a Class 2 Handicap and he will carry just 8st 9lb, which is 17lb less. That said, I appreciate today’s race is a different kettle of fish in terms of the opposition.

When horses are entered for more than one race in quick succession, it’s often because connections want them to win, then win again under a penalty. That's because the penalty enforced in the follow up race is often less severe than their revised handicap mark might be. The penalty is stated in the race conditions and typically varies between 3lb and 7lb. So if  a horse was likely to be raised 10lb for a win, but the penalty for running in a race after a recent win is just 3lb, he would be 7lb better off, or “well in”.

In the case of Jer Batt, I would assume they planned on him winning yesterday, and the penalty carried would have helped him get into today's race too, as he sits at the bottom of the handicap. But with just ten horses due to line up when the maximum allowed in the race is 17, he gets in regardless, rather than facing the risk of being balloted out

If he had won yesterday, he would still have been permitted to run in this race, but with a 5lb penalty to carry. However, he didn't win, and runs with no penalty today, which could be crucial in terms of his wining chance.

Will it be third time lucky for Jer Batt?

I really like Jer Batt in this 5f Handicap. He has run solidly in this race on two previous occasions, and he is significantly lower in the handicap this time around. Unlike yesterday, he has landed a perfect draw on the near side in Stall 10. The other key factor is that he will only carry 8st 9lb today, far less than his 9st 12lb burden yesterday. I also like the booking of top jockey Ray Dawson, which is not usual for these trainers.

In terms of negatives, Jer Batt only ran yesterday, and the conditions were testing, so he could be feeling the effects of that. He also has a very modest strike rate of just 3/32, and he only managed to place in the last two renewals of this race.

When weighing up the positives and negatives, I feel strongly that Jer Batt will run a big race today. At 5/1, we can also play him each way, which is fantastic. If he wins, it's a 5/1 winner, but if he only places again, we get our stake back! As such, I’m willing to stake a full 1pt  each way on Jer Batt today.
