Whilst there is some fantastic National Hunt action taking place today, we head to Doncaster for the November Handicap on Finale day. This meeting is the curtain closer of the Flat season and it promises to be a cracker. Hopefully we can send the Flat off with a bang!
If you’re new around here, I’m RacingGav and I’m the resident horse racing tipster here. I publishe several articles per week, with a primary focus on free horse racing tips which include daily betting tips like this one, antepost selections, and a Lucky 15 for the ITV Racing action on Saturdays.
I also post non-tipping content covering horses and trainers to follow, big race trends and educational guides. Speaking of the latter (and relevant today) my guide covering the UK Handicap System is well worth a read!
At the time of writing, the best horse racing odds of 28/1 are available with bet365. Furthermore, bet365 are also offering enhanced place terms, with six places being paid. The weekend is here, make sure you don’t miss out on this fantastic deal.
I know, it’s a cheesy pun but I couldn’t resist. Thankfully my tipping is stronger than my pun game and in this article, I’ll explain the reasons behind advising Night Breeze as a bet. I certainly feel he is underestimated and overpriced in the market at 28/1!
Night Breeze is a very reliable type, who always runs his race. Overall he is 6/22 (27%) with 13/22 (59%) finishing in the first three. If we limit his form to races over 1m 3.5f and 1m 4f, his record becomes even more impressive. In terms of wins, he is 6/14 (43%) and 11/14 (79%) for top three finishes. Night Breeze has never finished out of the first five over those distances, which is remarkable given the calibre of races he runs in.
Although his latest run looks disappointing on paper, I feel he had excuses for that run. He travelled well through the race, but he lacked the turn of foot needed over the sharper 1m 2f trip. I also feel that Billy Loughnane looked after him as soon as it became evident he wasn’t winning, yet he was still only beaten by just over four lengths. Interestingly, the usual tongue tie was left off that time but it returns today.
Ian Williams has booked Rossa Ryan to ride Night Breeze in the November Handicap, which really caught my attention. Rossa is 3/7 (43%) for Ian Williams this year, and if you look at the statistics for the last five years, they are similarly impressive, showing a strike rate of 9/25 (36%).
If you limit it to horses aged four years old or over, Rossa’s record for Ian becomes 2/5 (40%) and 8/18 (44%) respectively. Over the last five years, if you had backed his rides for Ian in these circumstances, the profit to £1 level stakes would be +£31.00. Furthermore, there is his record on Night Breeze specifically, which is two wins from two rides; a perfect 100% strike rate.
I have said it before and I’ll say it again, Ian Williams is an extremely shrewd trainer who places his horses very well, especially when it comes to picking up prize money in valuable races.
This is a ÂŁ75,000 Handicap with nearly ÂŁ40,000 paid to the winner. As such, it comes as no surprise to see Ian Williams field a couple of runners here. It's a race he has won previously too, with Saunter Boy victorious back in 2017. Ian Williams has raided the prize money for places here too, a third in 2018 with Reshoun, and another third in 2024 with Oneforthegutter.
There is a lot to like about Night Breeze in the November Handicap. He has an exceptional record over this trip, and it’s also good to see the tongue tie return. Rossa Ryan is booked to ride, and given his fantastic record for the trainer and his successes with Night Breeze specifically, he's a fantastic choice. Ian Williams is very talented when it comes to placing his horses in valuable races, and this looks to be another one.
In terms of negatives, Night Breeze has never won off a mark beyond 87, and he runs off 95 here. That said, he placed in two valuable Handicaps off this mark over the summer, and he was only beaten by 2.5 lengths on his penultimate start off 2lb higher. My other concerns would be the busy season he has had, the juice in the ground, and the fact that he’ll need luck in running due to his hold up style.
All facts considered, I believe Night Breeze can outrun his odds here. I definitely wouldn’t want to be laying him at 28/1 and the effective odds of 5.6/1 for a place look exceptional value too, especially with six places. Given a clear run and no excuses, I fully expect Night Breeze to finish in the first six, but he could eaily cause an upset here.
