The first of this week’s free horse racing tips was Dandy’s Angel at Hamilton yesterday. She finished in second place at double figure odds, returning place money! She had a rough race, and then had to barge her way out to see daylight, but by that point, the winner had kicked for home and was gone. Hopefully today’s betting tip will have more luck in-running!

At the time of writing, the best horse racing odds for Austrian Theory are 9/2. One of the bookmakers offering these odds is Betano and you may be interested to know that they have a fantastic new customer sign up offer! Those of you who tune into my Betting.co.uk YouTube content will already know about this fantastic deal. If you bet £10 you’ll get £30 of free bets. What a great deal.
There are several reasons why I believe that Austrian Theory will come out on top in this 1m 3.5f Amateur Jockeys’ Handicap. In this article, I’ll break them down for you, so that you can understand my logic.
Austrian Theory finished third in a Group 2 race on just his third start, picking up an official handicap mark of 104. The following year, he won a Class 2 handicap off a mark of 94 and his mark rose back up to 99.
Four years on, he is now rated just 69 and racing in a Class 5 (0-70) Handicap. While his opening mark was likely overinflated and he is also not the horse he once was, he finished second and third off marks of 80 either side of a break in October 2025 and April 2026. Therefore, even on that form alone, he is very attractively handicapped at 11lb lower!
I believe a huge part of Austrian Theory’s greatly reduced mark is the very dry and hot weather we have endured this year. On his final start of 2025, he ran on Soft ground and on the opening run of his 2026 campaign, he ran on Good to Soft, and he performed very solidly in both. However, since then, he has only run on Good or Good to Firm ground.
After the recent rainfall the official going description at Haydock is Soft. Furthermore, they are expecting a further 1.3mm of rain late Wednesday night, followed by 16mm of rain on Thursday. The vast majority of it will fall after his race, but there should be around 1.5mm ahead of his race.
If we look back to his last win, which was in October 2024, he won on Soft ground at Pontefract off a mark of 79. That is 10lb higher than the mark that he’ll run off here, but crucially he gets the same ground conditions.
If you look at Austrian Theory’s wins, they have been at Pontefract, Epsom, Hamilton and Doncaster which are all stiff and/or galloping tracks. As a horse that needs some time to get rolling, they’re ideal for Austrian Theory. In stark comparison, his latest run was at Catterick which is notoriously tight and sharp, especially on faster going.
As well as the more suitable ground, I think Austrian Theory could really enjoy this first trip to Haydock. It is a big galloping track, which is very similar to Doncaster in many ways. I think the run in could be the key part of the track, as it is four and a half furlongs long and it rises throughout. That will give Austrian Theory plenty of time to get rolling and reel in the horses in front of him, who will likely find the conditions a little testing.
I really like Austrian Theory. He is the classy animal, and in this line up I think that class will shine through and prevail. He finally gets some juice in the ground, which he hasn’t seen for months, and coincides with his drop off in form. He is yet to tackle Haydock but I think it’ll be perfect for him. Furthermore, I thought Thomas Easterby got a good tune out of him at Catterick, he retains the ride here, and claims 3lb against fellow amateur riders.
In terms of negatives, Austrian Theory is unproven at Haydock. He hasn’t won since October 2024, which cannot be ignored. Finally he is ridden by an amateur here, which carries its own risks. Despite those few negatives, Austrian Theory is the one to beat here, and I think 9/2 is a price that is well worth playing. Given there are four places we’ll get 95% of our stake back if he comes second, third or fourth. On that basis, I’m prepared to play 1pt each way.
