It’s a new week and hopefully this one will be as fruitful as last week was. The highlight being Bourbon Blues winning for us at 7/1 SP and returning a beautiful 10.4pts!
If you’re new here, I’m RacingGav and I’m the resident horse racing expert at Betting.co.uk. My primary responsibility is providing free horse racing tips, which are mostly daily, but with a few antepost picks thrown in for good measure, and a Lucky 15 on Saturdays. I also publish non-tipping content too, including big race trends, and educational guides, plus monthly horses and trainers to follow.
My next antepost selection runs in the Cambridgeshire at Newmarket on 26 September. He was advised at 33/1, but is now priced as short as 12/1 in some places, and 16/1 in others, so there’s still a bit of each way value there.
At the time of writing, the best horse racing odds of 8/1 for Percival to win are available at Unibet. This brand is also worth highlighting because of its fantastic new customer sign up offer. If you bet £20 you’ll get £40 of free bets which certainly makes it worthwhile opening an account.
Percival is currently 0/4 in Britain but I think he can race into the winner’s enclosure today. In the rest of this article, I’ll explain why I think that’s the case, so be sure to keep reading.
You’ll struggle to find a more frustrating run than Percival had last time out at Windsor. He was sent off at just 9/2 that day, but sadly he never had a chance to show what he was capable of.
He raced down the inside rail and that was where he remained. From 2f out, all the way to the line, he was consistently blocked by horses in front of him and on his outside, meaning he had nowhere to go.
The handicapper has clearly overlooked that run, and the 3lb drop from 83 to 80 is very generous. Crucially, it also allows Percival to drop into this easier (0-80) race, despite being beyond this level.
Percival is French bred, out of the French dam Bella Bolide, who produced a Black Type horse in Bolide Porto. He was sired by Camelot, who won the Racing Post Trophy at two, was crowned Champion three-year-old, and won the Guineas, the Derby, and the Irish Derby, so Percival is very well bred!
Camelot won the Irish Derby on Soft/Heavy going, Bella Bolide won on Good to Soft going, and Percival’s only win to date was in France on Heavy ground. While Percival is clearly versatile groundwise, I think he’ll much prefer today’s softer conditions than the Good to Firm going he has been running on this campaign.
Percival’s trainer, Dylan Cunha, and owner, Quest Thoroughbreds, have booked James Doyle to ride, which is rather noteworthy. If you look at James Doyle’s statistics for Dylan Cunha, you will see that he has recorded 3/7 (43%) winners, with 5/7 (71%) finishing in the first three.
If you restrict James’ rides for Dylan to 2026 only, he is 2/2 (100%) and hopefully he can maintain that unbeaten record here. Also, Percival can be a bit of a handful in the preliminaries, so it’s great to have an experienced jockey like James in the saddle. Likewise, I think the pace is likely to be sedate here, and James has the awareness to know where to be in that scenario - Prominent!
I like Percival a lot for this race. I think you can draw a line straight through his Windsor run last time, and I’m quite astonished that the handicapper decided to drop him 3lb for that, allowing him into 0-80 company. In this level of race, and with softer ground conditions, I think he’ll be a real force, and the fact that James Doyle is booked to ride, just serves to add another layer of positivity.
In terms of negatives, Percival has yet to win in Britain. It is also concerning that he has played up in the preliminaries previously, so there is a chance he could ruin his chance before the race starts.
Based on the positives Percival is worth a strong bet, but with the negatives taken into account, I’m not going to get carried away. So I’ve compromised with a solid 1pt each way bet today.
