We head to Scotland for today’s betting tip, which comes at Ayr! As I type this, the horse I’ve selected is currently the outsider, and he is available at odds as big as 14/1. That feels completely wrong to me, and I’m taking advantage of the value while it lasts!

In rainy Scotland, Zowal can brighten the day!

I’m frankly quite shocked that Zowal is the 14/1 outsider in this field, and I cannot see him being in that position come 15:08 tomorrow. In this article, I’ll break down why I think he should be priced much shorter, and why I think he’ll easily outrun his odds.

Zowal should relish these testing conditions

If he's anything like most French-bred horses, Zowal will relish these testing conditions. He is a son of Zarak, who won on both Soft and Heavy going during his career.

The two standout performances of Zowal’s career have also been on Soft or Good to Soft, so he is definitely seen at his best when there’s some juice in the ground. His career best performance over in France was at Bordeaux Le Bouscat when racing on Heavy going, just as we have today.

His form can tend to make him look inconsistent, but I suspect a lot of that has to do with unfavourable ground conditions. We saw this last time out when he was obliged to race on Good going. With the softer ground here, I expect to see the real Zowal, and he’s handicapped to strike as he races off his last winning mark of 75.

Zowal is bred to stay this longer trip

Zarak’s sire produced wins over 1m, 1m 2f, and 1m 4f during his career, with the latter at Group 1 level in the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud. That means there is plenty of hope that Zowal will stay for his first try at 1m 2f today.

If you look closely at the statistics, 15 out of 48 horses sired by Zarak who have run over 1m 2f to 1m 3f have won, which is 31%. Overall, they are 20 from 108 (19%). Zarak has also sired multiple winners over 1m 4f, 1m 5f, and even 1m 6f+. Zowal’s win in April was over 1m at Pontefract, which is a stiff mile, and he wasn’t stopping at the line.

Zowal performs at his best for Jason Hart

All three of Zowal’s best performances (two wins and a fourth at Beverley) came with Jason Hart on board, so he clearly gets a great tune out of the horse, and it’s a huge positive to see him back in the saddle again today.

Incidentally, Zowal’s three best performances produced RPRs of 84, 82 and 79. A repeat of any of those off his current mark of 75 would give him a solid chance at worst, and an exceptional chance at best. Jason Hart has also been in good form, with nine winners in the last fortnight, including a treble at Ripon last Saturday!

Can Zowal bounce back today?

There are plenty of things in Zowal’s favour today. Heavy ground is usually quite Marmite for horses, in that they either love it or hate it, and I think he’ll fall into the love it camp. He also steps up in trip today, and based on his pedigree, and previous performances, that will suit him too. Added to that, he is back to his last winning mark, and Jason Hart takes the ride. All of which adds up to a strong case.

In terms of negatives, he is only 2/14 under Rules, but he does have excuses. He wasn’t right for his first season in the UK and the ground has been unfavourable for several of his runs this season. We are also gambling on the fact he’ll stay the 1m 2f trip.

When you weigh up both sides of the argument for Zowal, he is massively underestimated at 14/1 and I think he can outrun those odds. However, given the negatives, I’m only playing half stakes on this one.
