Yesterday’s betting tip, Naqeeb, cruised into the race on the bridle and looked a big danger with 2f to 3f left to run. However, Andrew Balding's Respond, ridden by Oisin Murphy, powered clear in the style of a very smart horse. It’ll be interesting to see how the handicapper views it, but for me, I think it was an exceptional performance from Respond, rather than a poor one from Naqeeb.

and it comes on the All Weather at Southwell in their 5f Handicap. I think this Richard Hannon runner could take some beating if he returns to his best and I think he can under today’s conditions.

Cayman Tai can maintain his unbeaten record at Southwell!
As it stands, Cayman Tai is 1/1 over course and distance. Shortly after 19:30 today I think he’ll be 2/2, and in the rest of this article I’ll explain why.
Cayman Tai was an easy winner over this C&D in May
Cayman Tai ran over today’s C&D for the first time in May this year. That run came off a mark of 68 in a 0-70 Handicap and he proved to be a class above his rivals.
When asked to go on and win the race by jockey Seamus Cronin, he did exactly that and powered clear by four lengths at the line. The RPR of 79 he was awarded reflected the performance, and the handicapper subsequently raised him 9lb to a mark of 77.

After his emphatic win at Southwell, and with the 9lb rise looming, they quickly sent him out again under a penalty. As such, he was 4lb well in when he raced under a 5lb penalty at Chepstow eight days later.
Despite putting in a huge run that day, he was denied by just a neck. After that his new mark kicked in and he has struggled since, albeit running some promising races in defeat. Interestingly, all of his post-Southwell runs have been on Turf, but that changes today.
Cayman Tai could take some stopping in a 0-70 Handicap
Cayman Tai has run eight times since his victory here in May, but has failed to win. As a result, his handicap mark has come right back down to his last winning mark of 68. That means he is eligible for 0-70 Handicaps again, for the first time since his win here in May.
Not only does Cayman Tai drop back down in class, he also returns to the All Weather for the first time since his win. As mentioned already, he has a 100% record at Southwell and it’s noteworthy that he returns here.
Can Cayman Tai go 2/2 at Southwell?
As you can see, there are plenty of positives for Cayman Tai today. He is proven over C&D, with an easy four length victory on his record. He has been campaigned on Turf since that win, and a return to the All Weather and particularly Southwell, could spark him back to form. He is now back down to his last winning mark, and once again eligible to run in 0-70 Handicaps.
On the negative side, his overall record is underwhelming, with just two wins from 33 starts. With ten seconds and three thirds, he may be a bit of a bridesmaid, so he must prove he has the desire to win today.
Between his hit and miss profile, poor strike rate and this race only having seven runners, I’m playing today’s bet win only. So rather than half stakes each way, it’ll be the full 1pt on the nose. If he performs as he did on his last visit to Southwell, he should win this race anyway.
