For the fifth time in six seasons, Liverpool kick their league campaign off by taking on one of the newly promoted sides. Ipswich Town’s last top-flight fixture was against the Reds at Anfield in 2002.
The Tractor Boys are back in the big time after 22 years away. They couldn’t have asked for a much more difficult first opponent than Liverpool, and their task has been made even harder by the absence of their joint top scorer from last term, Nathan Broadhead, and potentially four more players.
Harry Clarke and George Hirst are the other two notable individuals to miss out, while new captures Jacob Greaves and Liam Delap are set to feature.
The club record signing of winger Omari Hutchinson delighted manager Kieran McKenna, who himself was linked with Manchester United, Chelsea, and Brighton over the summer.
Liverpool fans have been left frustrated by the club’s lack of transfer activity, especially as news emerged that they would not be seeking alternatives to Martin Zubimendi, who snubbed the Reds to stay at Real Sociedad.
On the pitch, though, the Arne Slot era has got off to a positive start. Victories over Arsenal, Manchester United, and Sevilla were highlights of an undefeated pre-season, and the Dutchman has a fully fit squad to choose from as he prepares for competitive action.
Among those who could benefit from Slot’s appointment is Ryan Gravenberch, who only started 12 league games under Jurgen Klopp but impressed during the 4-1 triumph against Sevilla on Sunday and is in line to be named in his compatriot’s opening day XI.
Ipswich’s most recent Premier League stint was from 2000 until 2002. Their results versus Liverpool in each campaign symbolised their dropoff from year one to year two.
On December 10th, 2000, Marcus Stewart’s goal earned the Tractor Boys only their second-ever win at Anfield. The return fixture in Suffolk four months later ended 1-1 and Ipswich finished fifth - just two places and three points behind treble winners Liverpool.
The 12 months that followed could not have been more different. The Reds were chasing the title, while George Burley’s outfit found themselves in a relegation battle and weren’t helped by two drubbings at the hands of Liverpool - 6-0 at Portman Road, and 5-0 on Merseyside on the final day.
McKenna has done a terrific job in making Portman Road a fortress throughout his tenure with the Blues, but they are taking a significant leap in class on Saturday lunchtime.
Klopp never lost a league opener with Liverpool, but previous boss Brendan Rodgers suffered a 3-0 defeat at the hands of West Bromwich Albion in his first game in charge. Ipswich fans will hope Slot suffers a similar fate.
Liverpool played two friendlies on Sunday and the team selections provided clues as to how Slot will line up at Ipswich. The side that beat Sevilla was mostly composed of players who returned earliest from their summer breaks, and it should be close to the XI for their first meaningful fixture. Diogo Jota found the net as he occupied the number nine role, and the best bet is for the Portuguese attacker to score on Saturday.
Injuries have restricted Jota to just 26 league starts for the Reds across the last two years. Only Erling Haaland and Alexander Isak managed a greater goals-per-minute ratio in 2023-24, and if the former Wolverhampton Wanderers man can stay fit, he will be difficult to dislodge from the centre forward position at Anfield this season.
At the time of writing, the 27-year-old, whose finishing ability has been compared to Robbie Fowler's, is offered at longer odds in the anytime goalscorer market on the Betfair Sportsbook than Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz.
With Liverpool generally priced at 1/3 in the match odds and their total goals line set at three, the 6/4 available for their striker to score looks particularly generous.
It wouldn't be the first opening-day Jota goal in East Anglia. He broke the deadlock in Liverpool's 3-0 success over Norwich City on matchday one of the 2021-22 season. A similar outcome could be on the cards here.
