It’s crunch time in the European Under 21 Championships, as surprise package Israel go up against tournament favourites England for a place in the final. It has been 39 years since England last won the tournament, but that could all change this week if they can defeat Israel and the winners of Wednesday’s other semi final, between Spain and Ukraine.
It’s not exactly been plain sailing for Israel so far. They took just one point from their first two group fixtures (including a 2-0 defeat to their semi-final opponents). But a scrappy 1-0 win over the Czech Republic, followed by a penalty shoot-out victory over hosts Georgia, has made them unlikely semi-finalists.
Based on their displays so far, they will need to significantly up their game to pose any threat to England. They’ve managed just two goals so far, and rarely threatened to breach the Georgia defence during a turgid quarter final. Their pre-tournament form was hardly inspiring either. Their two warmup fixtures resulted in a heavy defeat to Spain and a draw against a weak Macedonian team.
In contrast to their opposition, England cruised through their group with three 2-0 victories, including an impressive win against a strong German side. It was less straightforward in the quarter finals, but an Anthony Gordon goal saw them edge past Portugal in a tense encounter.
Along with Gordon, Emile Smith-Rowe, Harvey Elliott and Jacob Ramsey have impressed for the Three Lions going forward. Whilst at the other end of the pitch, James Trafford is yet to concede a goal. If England can approach anything like their top form on Wednesday, it could be a long evening for Israel.
It was just last week that the two sides met in the group stages, with England winning by two goals to nil. Gordon and Smith-Rowe did the damage, but in truth, it was a one sided game, and the scoreline flattered Israel somewhat. Before that, the teams had not met for ten years, Israel won by the only goal in that encounter.
As our pre-game statistics show, England have a much better pedigree when it comes to major tournaments. This is a groundbreaking tournament for the Israelis and will be deemed a success regardless of Wednesday’s result.
Based on the above information and taking into account the performance levels of both teams, our expert betting tip is for England to win to nil.
It will come as no surprise to see that we have tipped England to win (21/20 Ladbrokes) on Wednesday. They comfortably disposed of Israel in the group stage and their overall performance levels have been streets ahead of their opponents.
Unfortunately, England are as short as 2/5 to win in 90 minutes, which makes backing them tricky. So to add a bit of value to your bet, we recommend backing them to win without conceding. The Three Lions have kept four clean sheets so far and have rarely looked like conceding. Given Israel’s inability to score against a poor Georgian team, it is hard to say them posing Trafford and the England backline too many problems.
