Monday night sees a massive game when Liverpool host Arsenal at Anfield. Both teams have made the perfect start to their Premier League campaigns with two wins out of two matches. As title holders, Liverpool will be the favourites to win this game. But with the Gunners beating the Reds on their past two encounters, it’s not going to be an easy match to predict. So will Mo Salah score a hat-trick or will Pierre Emerick Aubameyang continue his epic goalscoring run? Check out our expert betting tips and make your predictions on this thrilling Premier League showdown.
Liverpool have come off the back of a commanding 2-0 away win at Chelsea. This saw the attacking trio of Mo Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino combining to devastating effect, with Mane in particular looking extremely confident.
But it’s the new arrival of Thiago Alcantara who is looking really exciting. The midfielder made the perfect start last week, and his solidity will make it easier for Virgin Van Dijk to control the back four. This is especially important as centre backs Joe Gomez and Joel Matip might not be fit for Monday’s match. However, it’s only by being complacent that Jurgen Klopp’s team will lose this match.
Arsenal might have only narrowly beaten West Ham 2-1 last weekend, but things are looking good for the Gunners. Mikel Arteta has managed to revamp the team and the signing of a new three-year contract for star striker Pierre Emerick Aubameyang will provide plenty of confidence.
However, there are still some injury concerns for the Gunners. Kiernan Tierney pulled out of the West Ham game at the last minute due to muscular discomfort. Plus Granit Xhaka, David Luiz and Mesut Ozil have all been absent recently. But with the experience of Alexandre Lacazette being balanced by youth in the form of Bukayo Saka, it seems that Arsenal finally have a nicely balanced squad.
Any game between Liverpool and Arsenal is going to be a gripping encounter. These two footballing titans have met each other on 230 occasions in the past 127 years. Liverpool have had a slightly better winning record with 89 wins, compared to Arsenal’s 80. There have been 61 draws between the two teams.
The last time that these two teams met was in this year’s Community Shield. This saw Arsenal walking away as the surprise winners after a thrilling 5-4 penalty shoot-out. The game went to extra time after Takumi Minamino’s second half strike cancelled out Pierre Emerick Aubameyang’s superb opener.
Prior to this, Arsenal also recorded another victory against Liverpool in July’s Premier League clash. While Sadio Mane gave Liverpool a deserved lead, the Gunners quickly scored two goals thanks to uncharacteristic errors from Virgil Van Dijk and Alisson.
This came after Liverpool comfortably beat Arsenal 3-1 at home in August 2019. Joel Matip scored the first-half header while Mo Salah was on form again to grab a brace. Arsenal’s Lucas Torreira could only manage a consolation goal in the 85th minute.
We should also remind you of the ten-goal thriller between these teams in last year’s League Cup. The game was tied 5-5, and Liverpool managed to scrape through by winning the penalty shootout 5-4. In fact, these encounters always seem to provide plenty of goals, and you have to go back to August 2015 to find the last goalless draw between Liverpool and Arsenal.
Monday’s game features two of the highest scoring strikers in the Premier League. Mo Salah has already grabbed a hat-trick in Liverpool’s opening game against Leeds United, while Pierre Emerick Aubameyang has scored one goal and made one assist. Both strikers have been Golden Boot winners in the past, and neither are looking like slowing down in their scoring. Salah’s partnership with Firmino and Mane will cause Arsenal plenty of problems, while the interplay between Aubameyang and Lacazette is a force to be reckoned with. All of which could set the stage for plenty of goals on Monday evening.
Although Arsenal have had the upper hand in the past two meetings with Liverpool, we think that Monday could see Liverpool taking their revenge. The Reds will be hungry to stamp their dominance on the Premier League again, and the addition of Thiago Alcantara looks like being a very shrewd signing.
Not that this will be a walkover for Jurgen Klopp’s side. With Aubameyang, Arsenal have a proven goalscorer, and they will be keen to get a hat-trick of wins over Liverpool. So while we think that Liverpool will win this game, if you are looking for a value betting tip, we’d recommend going with Unibet’s odds of 2.95 for Pierre Emerick Aubameyang to score a goal at some point in the match.
