The two teams at the top of the Premier League table face off in possibly one of the most enticing matches of the season so far. Both teams come into the game in good form, and the winner will top the Premier League on Christmas Day. Read below for our match preview, predictions and best bets.
Before last weeks’ game against Man United at Anfield, Liverpool looked unstoppable, winning six of their last eight games in the league, and sitting atop of the table. However, United held them to a 0-0 draw in a game which Liverpool dominated, and because of this are now below Arsenal in the table and looking to respond in the best possible way. Darwin Nunez will miss the game due to a ban, but it will be a chance for Cody Gakpo or someone else in the ranks to step up and lead the team up top.
After leading the title race for most of the season last year, the Gunners missed out on their first league title in 18 years after a poor run to end the season. This year has been the same story, they sit top of the league, and have lost just twice, to both Newcastle and Aston Villa away from home. Defensively, they sit with Liverpool as the league’s best, conceding less than a goal a game on average. Arteta’s men won convincingly in their last game against Brighton 2-0, halting the Seagulls 32 league game consecutive scoring run, and now travel to Anfield full of confidence. A cracking game is in store.
Last season, when the two sides faced off, it was Arsenal who came out the better of the two, as they beat Liverpool at the Emirates 3-2 in a game that had it all. When The Gunners visited Anfield towards the end of the season, they took an early 2-0 lead and the game looked a foregone conclusion, but two Liverpool goals from Mo Salah and Roberto Firmino levelled the scoring as the game finished 2-2. Before last season however, Liverpool had been dominating the matchup, winning four league games in a row.
This season, just one point separates the two teams at the top of the table. Liverpool are unbeaten at home and have lost just one game so far, whereas Arsenal’s away form isn’t the greatest with their two losses coming on the road in big games.
Despite the home and away from swinging in their favour, I believe Arsenal will have enough talent and midfield presence to hold for a draw in this one.
Despite just one loss this season, Liverpool have had some close calls in recent weeks, behind 1-0 to Crystal Palace until a red card changed the game, where Klopp's side battled to a victory. Liverpool were also held to a 0-0 home draw to the out-of-form Manchester United.
Arsenal have looked convincing, despite their recent loss to Aston Villa, where they were arguably the better side, they have looked in control of nearly every match, and have beaten the champions Manchester City in that time.
Arsenal’s midfield is what this game will come down too. On paper, it is much stronger then Liverpool’s three, and now with summer signing Kai Havertz on form and finding some goals, it is getting better by the week.
Both teams will certainly be happy with a draw going into Christmas, and with the odds of 3.60 at Bet365, it is certainly a chance to make some money.
