Liverpool and Newcastle go head to head in the Premier League on New year’s day in what is the first fixture of 2024 in the league.
Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool side sit two points clear of nearest challengers Arsenal at the top of the Premier League. The Red’s are currently on a run of 12 games unbeaten in the league and their main aim will be to take their good form forward into the new year. Liverpool are one of three sides in the league who are yet to pick up a loss at home and, as has been the case for many years, Anfield has become a place in which opposition teams are afraid to visit.
Newcastle United have had a torrid time of late, picking up five losses in their last 10 in all competitions with only three of those games being wins, all three coming at St James Park.
Eddie Howe’s side suffered double heartbreak in the space of a week in December, exiting both the Champions League and the Carabao Cup, at the hands of AC Milan and Chelsea respectively. Sadly for the Magpies, they have been unable to put that disappointment behind them as they have lost two games on the spin in the Premier League since that cup loss at Stamford Bridge.
Over the years, these two sides have engaged in some Premier League classics and it could be argued that this season’s reverse fixture at St. James’ Park is up there in that conversation. It was a game that had everything and saw Liverpool grab two late goals to snatch the three points.
In terms of their recent record against each other, form certainly favours Liverpool, with the Reds winning the last five meetings in a row and are unbeaten in the last 14 competitive fixtures between the two sides.
On form and the history between the two sides, all things regarding this game point in the direction of a Liverpool win and it has to be said it is very difficult to look past the Red’s getting all three points in this one.As mentioned above, the most obvious bet for this one is seemingly backing a Liverpool and that is what I am tipping for this one as I fully expect the Red’s to capitalise on Newcastle’s poor run of form.
It is hard to look past Liverpool winning the game. Multiple factors contribute to this, in particular the fact that Liverpool are still unbeaten at home this season, as well as that Newcastle at the moment are on a very worrying slump of form that has left many fans worried.
The Anfield crowd is almost certain to play a huge part in the game and the Liverpool faithful will be doing everything they can to back their team on to get the win.
Liverpool are as short as 1.45 to win with bet365, with the market agreeing with our analysis. However, adding over 2 two goals in the bet builder provides odds of 1.8.
Newcastle's away record is the second worst in the league, with only Sheffield United picking up less points than Newcastle's five on the road. Eddie Howe's side have averaged 32 goals in their away games, conceding 18 and scoring 14.
Liverpool have won seven and drawn two home games, with these draws coming against Arsenal and Manchester United. Games at Anfield have averaged 28 goals, with the Reds scoring 22 and conceding just six.
