The Premier League title is Liverpool’s to lose this season. With 11 games to go, the Reds are top of the ladder and are 11 points clear of Arsenal in second place. Can anyone catch them? They take on a Newcastle United side who are breathing down the neck of Manchester City as they battle it out for the fourth and final Champions League spot.
Can Anyone Stop Liverpool?
Liverpool are the best team in England by a country mile. There is no escaping that fact.
The Reds have been sensational under new manager Arne Slot. Many thought it would take him a while to get settled and being in the shadow of Jurgen Klopp would be too difficult for him.
That has not been the case as Liverpool lead the way and it would take a monumental collapse for them not to win the Premier League this season.
The Reds have tasted defeat just once this season from 27 matches. That is a massive feat in itself. They are currently on a 23 game unbeaten run and have won three of their last five league games, including a 2-0 win over defending champions Manchester City.
Liverpool have a very strong squad and if they have any injuries or suspensions, they have someone of immense quality to step in. Conor Bradley is a doubt with a muscle injury, but if he doesn’t start then Trent Alexander-Arnold will.
Magpies Chasing Champions League Spot Again
Newcastle United are slowly and surely becoming a top team in the Premier League. After qualifying for the Champions League a couple of seasons ago, they have their sights set on that target again.
Eddie Howe has made the Toon Army believe again and with players like Alexander Isak, Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes, Anthony Gordon and Fabian Schar they could soon have some silverware in their trophy cabinet.
This might be a league game, but it could give us a glimpse into what to expect when the two sides walk out at Wembley in the Carabao Cup Final on March 16.
The Toon has been up and down in recent weeks. They lost consecutive matches against Fulham and Manchester City - the 4-0 loss at City was a complete shock.
They bounced back last weekend with a seven-goal thriller against Nottingham Forest. They managed to hang on for a 4-3 win after being 4-1 in front after 34 minutes.
Brazilian international Joelinton remains on the injury list as he is still struggling with a knee injury. Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles are still out with knee injuries as well.
These two have met on many occasions in the past. Liverpool have been successful 80 times from 163 meetings, while the Magpies have won just 42.
Newcastle United hosted Liverpool at St James’ Park in December and a late goal from Schar rescued a point in a 3-3 draw.
Liverpool have won their last three matches against Newcastle at Anfield. The last time the Toon won on Merseyside was back on April 16 in 1994 when Andy Cole and Rob Lee both scored in a 2-0 win.
This looks like a great Premier League clash between first and fifth and it should be a tight affair. However, Liverpool are in no mood to give other teams a chance and this could be a lot easier than we have all been anticipating.
The Reds are top of the ladder with 64 points and are a staggering 20 points clear of Wednesday’s opponents.
It is very difficult to look past a Liverpool win at the moment. They are set up well and look focused not to let this huge lead slip.
The home side are the expected favourites and can be backed at 1/2 with Betano. The Magpies are 19/4 to take the three points, while the draw is available at 15/4.
Nunez To Prove His Doubters Wrong
Uruguay international Darwin Nunez has come under intense criticism in recent weeks after missing a golden opportunity to score in their draw at Aston Villa.
He even came under fire from his manager after his performance as he seemed to switch off and lose interest in the game.
Those actions - and not missing the sitter - saw him sit on the bench for the whole 90 minutes in the win over 90 minutes against Man City.
Maybe that was Slot proving a point, but he doesn’t seem to be a manager who holds a grudge for a long time. Nunez will have worked hard in training to prove he is still capable of performing at the highest level.
He might not start the game at Anfield on Wednesday, but we expect him to get on the field. When he does, we are backing him to take his chance and get on the score sheet to secure victory for the title-chasing Reds.
Back Nunez to get on the scoresheet with Liverpool winning and both teams scoring goals.
