After Leon Bailey stung home a winner for Aston Villa at their West Midlands fortress on Wednesday night, one of the most exciting and haphazard early title races in recent memory took another twist, with the ever-defending champions Manchester City sitting six points adrift of the top spot at time of writing.
In a bid to get back on track and keep pace with those surrounding, they must brave a Sunday afternoon trip to Kenilworth Road, home of the battling Luton Town who currently, against all odds, sit a space above the drop zone after a brave, albeit unsuccessful fight against Arsenal in a 4-3 defeat.
It’s the top of the mountain pitching off against its optimistic climbers, and we’ve compile all the background you need to enjoy this latest bout of top-flight action to the max, from the stands to the bookies.
The writing was put on the wall for Luton Town from the moment they stepped into the Premier League for the first time in their history following their miraculous Wembley victory over fellow surprise package Coventry City.
Despite the monetary value that winning the world’s most nerve-wracking trophy brings, The Hatters have still operated on a limited budget, recruiting shrewdly, bringing in a wealth of second-tier stars in a strategy that will provide them hope for their Premier League mission and reassurance should it fail.
While the start of the season may have been as miserable as expected, getting their first ever win up at the top tier at the sixth time of asking at the expense of Everton inspired confidence, before a tough run against four of the leagues “big six” has so far been a quietly impressive one.
A home win over Crystal Palace was added into the mix to take them out of the bottom three, and there were brave, battling performances against the aforementioned Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool, the latter of whom they managed to take a point away from. Luton have been written off since day one, but the battling and desire is present throughout the whole team, and it seems that maybe, just maybe, many spoke too soon.
Stop the press, Pep Guardiola’s footballing monopoly has failed to win a Premier League game in their last four. Near unbelievable, I know.
While the draws have been as entertaining to the neutral eye as I am sure they were frustrating to the Citizens, featuring a 1-1 with Liverpool, a 4-4 with Chelsea and a wild 3-3with Tottenham, the defeat to Unai Emery’s Aston Villa was simply shocking.Managing just two attempts at goal at Villa Park compared to the hosts 22, the result leaves the champions in 4th , six points adrift of the summit which is occupied by last seasons slip-ups Arsenal.
The goals have been flowing at the same rate, before Aston Villa, anyway, but they have been doing so in the opposite direction as well, leaving City with some much-needed ground to pick up before they slip into the chasing pack, against an in-form Arsenal, Liverpool,Tottenham and, dare I say it, Aston Villa. What a title race it looks like we have.
Well, this is a bit of a difficult one, as the two sides haven’t squared off against each other since 1999.
A clash 24 years in the making, Luton Town’s first ever foray into Premier League football is so far proving an optimistic one, but against the well-oiled machine of Manchester City, they may hit a rude awakening to contrast their promising recent performances.
Only Burnley and Sheffield United have conceded more goals in the Premier League than Luton this season, but they have managed to score more goals than five of their competitors as well, namely those two Everton, Palace and Nottingham Forest. Those number do contrast starkly to those of their visitors, who have outscored them by 20 and conceded fewer than them by 13 so far in this campaign.
Luton, especially at home, are a team that like to sit in and frustrate. Man City are a team that like to press, pass and wear down. The action on Sunday, with this in mind, will certainly bean interesting one to watch.
Interestingly, Manchester City have been surprisingly leaky defensively. Pep's side have conceded more than half of last seasons tally already. They face off against a Luton side who are clinical in front of their home fans, especially from set-pieces.
Our Betting Tip for Today- Over 3.0 3.5 goal line
Manchester City are the obvious favourites for this tie due to the disparity of finances on hand for both teams. This bout has a real David vs Goliath feel to it and David will fancy their chances of upsetting the apple cart.
This game can be seen as a 'free hit' for the Hatters. Nobody is giving them any chance of a result, so they can go out and express themselves. Rob Edwards has been in adamant in saying that Luton fear no-one and this could play to their advantage.
The narrow, gut-wrenching 3-4 loss to Arsenal showcased Luton's ability in more ways than one. Not only did they go blow-for-blow with the Gunners, the Hatters showed their resilient and tenacious nature. This same mindset again and Luton could spring a surprise.
However, I feel the quality Manchester City possess should be too much for the battling underdogs and Manchester City should come out on top in an entertaining affair.
