Saturday evening's Premier League fix sees two heavyweights of the English game go head to head at the Etihad, as second place Manchester City host struggling Chelsea. Depending on Liverpool's game in the early kick-off, the Citizens have the chance to move top of the table - an opportunity Pep Guardiola will be keen to grasp. In this article, I will preview the game, as well as giving my best bets, tips and predictions.
After a stuttering start to the season for their standards, Manchester City are currently looking unbeatable. The Citizens are on a nine-match win streak in all competitions and undefeated since the 1-0 loss at Villa Park early in December.
City are also unbeaten at home, winning eight and drawing three of their league games in front of their own fans. They also boast the best home defensive record, conceding just 10 home goals.
Josko Gvardiol and Bernardo Silva are doubts for the game, but Pep still has an abundance of talent to call upon. Manchester City have also been very potent in attack, scoring 29 goals in 11 home games, only failing to score two or more goals in two games.
Despite hundreds of millions spent over the past few transfer windows, Chelsea are struggling in the league and currently sit 10th after a late win at Selhurst Park over Crystal Palace. Mauricio Pochettino is under immense pressure after a dismal start to his tenure in West London and a heavy defeat would only pile the pressure on even more.
While Chelsea games are bound to have frustrated their fans, they have certainly been entertaining for the neutrals, averaging 3.375 goals per game, with their last four games seeing at least four goals.
Pochettino has struggled to find his best team so far which has contributed to their inconsistency. However, one constant has been the midfield trio of Conor Gallagher, Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez. Caicedo is tasked with sitting deepest in the midfield, with Gallagher and Fernandez tasked with venturing forward.
Despite failing to win any of the last seven meetings between the sides, Chelsea still boast the better head to head record. The Blues have won 71 of the 176 meetings, with 40 ending as draws.
The 4-4 draw at Stamford Bridge were the first goals Chelsea had scored against City in six games, with this being a fixture Pep Guardiola has dominated in recent years.
Chelsea have been the dirtiest side on the road this season, while Manchester City rank low for home cards. Manchester City are also fast starters, ranking second for home goals scored in the first 15. Chelsea have also conceded the second most away from home in the first 15.
With Manchester City's strong home form, coupled with Chelsea's poor away form, I expect nothing other than a comfortable win for the Citizens.
Manchester City have won every game since the return of Belgian maestro Kevin De Bruyne. Since coming off the bench against Huddersfield, De Bruyne have averaged an assist every 60.5 minutes, scoring one every 181.5.
The 32-year-old is carrying on his spectacular form from last campaign, where he topped the assist charts with 16 assists in 28 Premier League starts.
Chelsea's midfield has come in for major criticism, with many slating the positional play, with opposition midfielders often finding pockets of space.
Kevin De Bruyne will excel with this space and looks a nice price for an assist.
