After a week filled with domestic cup action, the Premier League returns this weekend with some blockbuster fixtures. For today’s betting tip, we’ll be focusing on the important matchup between Manchester City and Chelsea at the Etihad.
Manchester City continue to be the most in-form team in the Premier League. Pep Guardiola’s side haven’t lost since a shock loss to Crystal Palace at the Etihad in October, and they’ve created a ten point gap atop the Premier League. They also continued their FA Cup journey with a win over Swindon last Friday.
It was reported that Manchester City had numerous COVID cases ahead of their fixture with Swindon. However, big names such as Kevin De Bruyne, Bernardo Silva, and Ilkay Gundogan all played. So, Phil Foden and Riyad Mahrez (who is away at the AFCON) are their only big absentees.
After an unbelievable start to the Premier League season, Chelsea are faltering during the winter period. They aren’t losing games, but four draws in their last five has left Thomas Tuchel’s team a mountain to climb to win the Premier League. However, they are coming into this fixture after beating Tottenham and securing a place in the Carabao Cup final.
Chelsea have a few long term injuries - mainly at the full back positions. Ben Chilwell has had surgery, and it was announced that his season ‘is most likely over’ by Thomas Tuchel. His opposite full back Reece James is also injured. Also, Spanish goalkeeper Kepa will be between the sticks as Edouard Mendy is away at the AFCON.
These two teams constantly met in 2021. The Blues had a fantastic recent record against Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City until the reverse fixture at Stamford Bridge. Guardiola’s side won 1-0 in London, and gave Guardiola his first victory over Thomas Tuchel in the Premier League.
Chelsea have beaten City in three of the last four encounters - including a victory in the Champions League final courtesy of Kai Havertz. They have also scored against City in six of their last seven, the only anomaly being the fixture at Stamford Bridge in September.
This fixture is too close to call. Manchester City look to be on the charge for another Premier League title, but Chelsea have rarely been beaten this season. The reverse fixture went the way of Manchester City, and it could go that way again, but we think it will be a draw. Therefore, we say the teams will finish all-square with Betfred at 3/1.
