In previous Premier League seasons, a game between Manchester United and Chelsea would be a match that would determine where the title would go or who would claim a Champions League place - unfortunately, this clash is not a battle for either option.
This is seventh versus 10th and both teams cannot afford to drop points or they could see their hopes of Champions League football next season fade by the second.
I watched Manchester United lose to Newcastle United last Saturday and it looked like these players had never played with each other before. Passes kept going astray or they bumped into each other, it was a shambles at times. Only Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire came out with any credit and it's not every day you can say that.
That defeat ended a three-game winning streak in the Premier League, but those victories only papered over the cracks. They have not been impressive in the league this season and if they continue to put in lacklustre performances the Old Trafford faithful will soon start to lose patience in manager Erik Ten Hag.
Jadon Sancho remains on the outer fringes at United and is again not up for selection because of his rift with Ten Hag. From an outsider, a confident Sancho would walk into this United team at the moment because he brings the creativity the team is lacking at the moment.
Ten Hag still has some big names in the medical room with Christian Eriksen, Mason Mount and Casemiro all missing from midfield. Any of those players would improve the team, but this is the problem Ten Hag is facing, he cannot get his best XI out on the field at the same time.
Chelsea are a bit like Manchester United in the way they are very frustrating. You just do not know which Chelsea team will turn up. Is it the one that hammered Tottenham, or the one got well beaten at Newcastle? You just don't know.
The Blues have won two of their last five Premier League matches with one draw and two defeats. They are so hit and miss Chelsea fans must be tearing their hair out.
They have spent millions and millions on players and Mauricio Pochettino doesn't seem to have a settled team. He doesn't know who he can trust. Nicolas Jackson looks decent at times, but maybe that is only against nine-men, while Raheem Sterling can be the best player on the field one week and go missing five days later.
Both players failed to score in their last game, so they will be eager to prove to everyone that they deserve a starting shirt. Connor Gallagher will miss the trip to Old Trafford following his red card against Brighton, while Ben Chilwell and Trevoh Chalobah are still on the injured list.
Five out of the last six Premier League meetings between Manchester United and Chelsea have ended in a draw. Their last encounter did not end up level though as United ran out comfortable 4-1 winners at Old Trafford in May.
The last time Chelsea won at Old Trafford was back in July 2020 when the Blues knocked United out of the FA Cup, while their last Premier League victory at the Theatre of Dreams was over 10 years ago in May 2013.
Overall, Manchester United have beaten Chelsea 34 times at Old Trafford from 84 attempts with 29 ending in draws. Chelsea have won on the road against United 21 times.
Despite not being a game that could decide the Premier League title, United versus Chelsea matches are normally entertaining with plenty of talking points. Check out these brief stats and the best betting odds to see if they will help you with your selections.
Our Betting Tip for Today- A penalty to be awarded in the game - 7/4 @ Bet365
Despite being away from home, Chelsea are the slight favourites in this one. The Blues have won three of their five Premier League wins this season away from Stamford Bridge. They are 7/5 to win at Old Trafford. United are available at 19/10, while the draw can be backed at 12/5.
With the quality in both of the squads, on paper this should be an entertaining contest. Unfortunately, as a famous manager once said, football is not played on paper.
The quality is failing to shine through for both teams at the moment and I think the managers would secretly be happy with a point a piece. It would keep the wolves from the door in terms of angry supporters.
I expect both teams to score and the game will end up all square. The penalty I am backing to be given as my bet of the game could end up being vital for one team. There has been a penalty awarded in three of the last four meetings between these two teams - one to Manchester United and two to Chelsea. I feel another coming along.
