Manchester United and Fulham take centre stage on Friday evening to open the new Premier League season.
After a mixed pre-season campaign that saw Manchester United lose more than they won, Erik Ten Haag almost secured his first title against Manchester City. Almost being the key word. A narrow loss to their arch-rivals on penalties in the Community Shield showed promising signs, and a big season is expected for Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho. United need to build on their FA Cup win at the end of the 2023/24 season and show more consistency in the Premier League.
Joao Palhinha's move to Bayern Munich will no doubt hurt Fulham heading into the new season, but the addition of Arsenal's Emile Smith Rowe looks to be an exciting one. Back to back goals for his new club in the final warm up games are promising signs, and if he can stay fit, Fulham could be a tricky team to encounter in the Premier League. Having finished the previous campaign in 13th, the Cottagers could be targeting a top-half finish this time around.
Last season Manchester United won 1-0 at Craven Cottage before Fulham beat them 2-1 for the first time in the Premier League at Old Trafford. Not many expect Fulham to go and do the same on Friday evening, but there will be plenty of optimistic fans heading north.
Fulham's pre-season has been bright and full of promise, whereas Man United's defence has shown plenty of vulnerability along the way. If they don't tighten up when out of possession, it could be another frustrating campaign for Ten Haag and the fans.
Man United may have defensive issues to iron out and injuries to contend with, but Fulham's form on the road last season is what cost them finishing in the bottom half of the table. However, despite Palhinha's absence this year, the squad looks settled and capable of progressing.
With Manchester United's defence far from settled, Fulham's new signing can continue his good form and look to test Andre Onana's gloves at the very least.
Emile Smith Rowe was the statement signing from Fulham this summer and fans have instantly fallen in love.
The former Arsenal midfielder has scored against Sevilla and Hoffenheim, appearing to settle in from the very first minute. Highly capable on his day, the 24-year-old will look to join attacks when Fulham progress with the ball or spark a counter attack.
Clearly not shy to make bursting runs into the box, the former England under 21 international would love nothing more but to continue his goalscoring run in his new white and black kit.
We saw time and time again throughout pre-season that Man United stood off attackers and allowed teams too much space in and around the box. If they do that against Fulham, expect Smith Rowe to fancy his chances of finding the back of the net.
