Manchester United play host to rivals Manchester City this Sunday at Old Trafford and this fixture is always full of drama. Ladbrokes have opened up the market and have Manchester United as your 4/1 underdogs to win at home, but the visitors City have opened up as your strong 4/6 favourites to win the first Manchester derby of the season.
I do think the fact that this is a derby could make this a slightly closer game than what the bookies have priced up; however, champions Manchester City are going to be very hard to beat regardless. This is going to be a fascinating game and I have a prediction for how this game will finish, but let’s take a look at both of the two teams first.
Manchester United have been their own worst enemy this season, but they are managing to pick up points which is keeping them in a competitive spot in the league. They are currently sat in 8th and in their 9 games of the premier league season so far, they have won 5 and lost 4, which has them in good stead however, they do seem to be lacking the quality up front and are paying the price for it. They only have 11 goals so far and have conceded 13 which is a big worry, and against a team like Manchester City, you really need to be playing better than that to get anything out of the game. I find it hard to see how United beat City in their current form.
Manchester City are currently sat in 2nd just two points behind league leaders Tottenham, and the 4/6 favourites are going to be really hard to beat despite being away from home. They did lose two games in a row to Wolves and then Arsenal, but they played really well to beat Brighton last weekend and even that performance would make them tough to beat here. They are clearly the superior team on paper and even though the 4/6 is a short price, they represent very good credentials to win at Old Trafford on Sunday.
The head to head between these two teams is pretty close and in the last 10 premier league fixtures between these two sides, Manchester United have won 4, Manchester City have won 5 and there has been just the one draw between them. So if you look at the head to heads to make your choice, then there isn’t much in it, however I don’t think it will be as close as that when you look at the quality of the two teams' individual players.
If you take results on paper then this game should be a close match, but the form of the two teams this season are on very different levels and I am going to play use the Outright market to make my selections for this Sunday's Manchester Derby.
Manchester City are very short in the market at 4/6, but they look like they are playing much better football than United and they are going to be very tough to beat so even though they aren’t a very big price, they definitely are the right price. Manchester United are going to have to put on one of the performances of the season to beat City this weekend, but they haven’t shown that they are capable of that yet this season and will need a lot of things to fall their way if they are to get anything from this game. One thing is for sure though, we are in for a treat on Sunday afternoon!
Now that we have taken a look at both of the sides' credentials for this week’s Manchester derby, I have a betting suggestion which I think is the banker of the weekend. As mentioned, Manchester United have been playing some good football without threatening up front and the fact that they have let in more goals than what they have scored has to be a big worry coming up against the current champions. They have only managed 11 goals in their 9 games so far and I just don’t see how they will be able to get a result this weekend.
Even if Manchester United scores first, I still think that City would take all of the beating because the pressure will just continue to grow through the whole game and ultimately prove too much for the home team to handle. I think from a betting perspective the 4/6 for Manchester City to win may feel quite short however we can’t help that and they are going to be very good value for it. Manchester City will take all of the beating on Sunday.
