The Premier League returns this weekend after both the FA Cup and some midweek action. Whilst Manchester United had a difficult week with a loss to Middlesbrough and a draw with Burnley, we take a look at if they can rebound in today’s betting tip. For today’s tip it is the important fixture between Manchester United and Southampton at Old Trafford.
Manchester United are in the midst of a poor run under Ralph Rangnick. The German started his career with wins, but the Reds are out of the FA Cup, and they have plateaued in the Premier League. A draw to Burnley midweek highlighted the Red Devils’ poor stretch, and they desperately need a win over Southampton to reach the top four.
United are dealing with a few COVID issues. Both Fred and Alex Telles were absent from the midweek games due to the virus, and they may miss the game with Southampton.
Southampton have been a difficult team to read this season. On any given night, they can produce draws against the likes of Manchester City, however, they struggle to find any level of consistency. The one constant with Southampton is drawing, they have eleven on the season - second most in the league.
In terms of squad news, the Saints haven’t encountered any new issues. Armando Broja was fit enough to feature against Tottenham Hotspur, whilst central defender Lyanco will be a long-term absentee.
These two sides have been involved in some memorable encounters during recent seasons. The most memorable was last season's meeting at Old Trafford. After two red cards, the Saints fell to an embarrassing 9-0 defeat on the road.
In general, Southampton have a better record against Manchester United than the 9-0 thrashing suggests. They have managed to draw in three of the last five against United, including Hassenhuttl’s team stealing a point from Old Trafford.
We expect Manchetser United to get back to winning ways despite their poor form. Southampton aren’t always reliable, and they’ve only won five games all season. United are desperate for the win and we think they will do it. We suggest backing both teams to score and a United win with Bet365 at 11/5.
