This Sunday sees a hugely important game between two Premier League heavyweights. Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur underperformed last season, and both teams have had mixed starts to their 2024/21 campaigns. Man U will be looking to star midfielder Bruno Fernandes to guide them to victory, while Tottenham might have to make do without in-form attacker Heung-Min Son.
But it’s a game that will be hugely important for Jose Mourinho. The Spurs coach had a turbulent time at Old Trafford, and he’ll be keen to set the record straight on Sunday. Read our betting tips for expert advice about how to bet on this Premier League match.
Manchester United’s 2024/21 Premier League campaign has been fairly unconvincing. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team slumped to an embarrassing 1-3 home defeat against Crystal Palace in the first game of the season. This was followed up by a slender 2-3 victory at Brighton thanks to Bruno Fernandes’ penalty with the last kick of the game.
There are still big questions about the Manchester United defence, and there’s ongoing debate about whether the signing of Jadon Sancho can add consistency to the team’s attack. But if Fernandes, Paul Pogba and Marcus Rashford are on form, then this team could take some beating.
Spurs benefited from the summer transfer window with solid signings such as Matt Doherty in defence and Pierre Emile Hojbjerg in midfield.
Despite this, Spurs have been inconsistent this season. A dismal 1-0 defeat to Everton was followed up by a 5-2 thrashing of Southampton. Last week saw Tottenham held to an unlucky 1-1 draw with Newcastle United, before narrowly beating Chelsea in the League Cup on penalties.
Heung-Min Son has been pivotal in Tottenham’s best performances, but the striker might miss out on Sunday’s game with a hamstring injury. All of which means that Harry Kane will once again be relied upon to lead the Spurs attack.
Manchester United have won 92 of their 193 games against Tottenham Hotspur. Spurs have only won 52 games and there have been 49 draws.
The last time that these two teams met was after the Premier League restart in June earlier this year. This saw Manchester United fighting back to get themselves a 1-1 draw. Steven Berwijn put Spurs ahead in the first half thanks to an increasingly characteristic David De Gea error.
However, the introduction of Paul Pogba as substitute after half-time gave Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team the impetus to get the equaliser through a Bruno Fernandes penalty.
Spurs looked much more confident in this June Premier League match compared to the previous meeting at Old Trafford in December 2019. This saw Manchester United emerging as 2-1 winners. Marcus Rashford put in a match-winning performance here with his fiery pace running rings around a lacklustre Spurs defence.
While Dele Alli managed to get Spurs back into the game with a fine equaliser after Rashford’s first-half goal, Rashford quickly put United ahead again after half-time to give Solskjaer’s team the three points.
Rashford scored the only goal in Man United’s 0-1 away win at Tottenham in January 2019. This game also saw David De Gea producing an increasingly rare goalkeeping masterclass with 11 first-class saves.
However, the previous encounter between the two teams saw Tottenham winning 3-0 at Old Trafford. This saw Spurs putting in a convincing performance with a brace of goals for Lucas Moura after Harry Kane put Tottenham ahead.
Jose Mourinho will be desperate to win on Sunday afternoon. The Tottenham manager had suffered an underwhelming record during his brief tenure at Old Trafford. Plus he had to witness Manchester United coming back to equalise with Spurs in the last few minutes of their encounter in June.
But Mourinho’s Tottenham finally managed to beat his old club Chelsea in the League Cup last week. All of which means that we could see some fireworks from the famously tempestuous manager on Sunday.
On paper, Manchester United should win this game. After all, the club has a good winning record against Spurs, and players like Fernandes and Rashford are looking in great form. But Solskjaer’s team have been looking directionless since the new season started. Plus the United defence has rarely looked less stable.
Much depends on whether Heung-Min Son is fit enough to start for Tottenham. So we are predicting that Spurs might nip a narrow win here. After all, Jose Mourinho will be firing on all cylinders to make sure that Tottenham finally win against his old club. You can find odds of 4.10 for a straight Tottenham win at BetVictor.
