With the International Break now over, our focus returns to the Premier League with the battle for Champions League places hotting up. One of Saturday’s mouth-watering ties sees Newcastle United host Chelsea at St James’ Park with the home side looking to put the pressure on the likes of Manchester United and Aston Villa.
Expectations remain high at Newcastle following their fourth-place finish and a Carabao Cup Final appearance last season. They currently occupy seventh place on the league ladder and victory over Chelsea will see them keep the pressure on the teams immediately above them.
The Magpies saw a seven-game unbeaten run come to an end in their last game. They were turned over 2-0 away at Bournemouth, and manager Eddie Howe is well aware they cannot afford to lose a second successive game if they want to be challenging for a European place.
Chelsea have started to hit some form with just one defeat in their last six Premier League matches and they have their sights set on the teams above them. They inflicted a first defeat of the season on fierce rivals Tottenham Hotspur and managed to score four goals in a draw with Man City.
The Blues have scored eight goals in two matches with Nicolas Jackson scoring four of them and Cole Palmer adding two. Manager Mauricio Pochettino has started to get a settled side and his influence is now showing.
The last three Premier League meetings between Newcastle United and Chelsea has seen a win for each team and a draw. Their last encounter ended in a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge with Anthony Gordon scoring for the Magpies before a Kieran Trippier own goal levelled for the Blues. Chelsea’s last win at St James’ Park occurred in October 2021 when Reece James scored twice in a 3-0 win.

Chelsea are slight favourites to win this game at 7/4 thanks to their recent form. Newcastle United are fancied at 7/5 which shows there is not a lot between the two teams. You can back the draw at 23/10
Despite being in 10th position, I think Chelsea are slowly becoming one of the teams to beat. They showed a lot of resilience to secure a late draw against Man City, while they were ruthless against nine-men Tottenham as they scored three late goals to claim a comprehensive 4-1 victory.
Under Pochettino, Chelsea could be a major force again. I believe they will frustrate the Magpies and win this game to nil. The likes of Jackson, Raheem Sterling and Palmer are finding some form and I think their constant pressing will be too much for Newcastle and the Blues will be too strong heading into the final 25 minutes or so.
