Newcastle United welcome table-topping Liverpool to Tyneside on Wednesday evening in the Premier League, with Magpies manager Steve Bruce under pressure after recent results.
Newcastle United have now gone three Premier League games without a win, and manager Steve Bruce has branded the “mass hysteria” around his team as unfair. As well as their poor Premier League form, which saw them beaten 2-0 at Manchester City on Boxing Day, the Magpies were recently knocked out the Carabao Cup by Championship side Brentford. The Toon now sit in 12th place in the Premier League table, but fans remained concerned about the team’s conservative style of play.
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp might be able to call on Thiago Alcantara on Wednesday, with the Spaniard having returned to training after being out of action since suffering a knee injury in October’s clash with Everton. Joel Matip is a doubt for the Reds, though, after limping out of the Boxing Day draw with West Bromwich Albion with a groin injury. Liverpool will want to return to winning ways after that disappointing 1-1 draw with the Baggies at Anfield.
These two teams have met 50 times in the Premier League in total, and Liverpool have won 29 of those clashes. Nine of those victories have come on Tyneside. The Magpies have beaten the Reds 11 times in the Premier League in total with all but one of those victories coming at St James’ Park. Liverpool have scored three goals in the last three Premier League meetings. Unibet are offering odds of 21/20 on the Reds scoring more than 2.5 goals on Wednesday.
Our tip for this game comes from Unibet, who are offering odds of 9/5 on Liverpool to win and both teams to score. We suspect that Liverpool will look pretty comfortable for most of the game but that they will slip up and concede at some stage.
