After back-to-back wins against the Czech Republic and Turkey, a shock defeat to Georgia saw Portugal under threat for the first time in the competition. A narrow escape against Slovenia on penalties followed, thanks to the heroics of Diogo Costa, who saved three consecutive penalties.
The recent performances will have Portuguese fans concerned, especially coming up against the tournament holders. If Roberto Martinez's side are to reach the semi-finals, his team are going to have to find another level on the hardest side of the draw.
France have fumbled through the Euros so far, but despite their lacklustre performances, especially in the group, are continuing to find a way to progress. Having only conceded two goals and remain unbeaten, their 1-0 win over Belgium was arguably their best performance so far.
But we know France are much more capable than what they have shown. They'll need to find another gear if they are to hold on to their title, but with so much talent a their disposal, it would be silly to write them off just yet as they grow into the competition.
Portugal's defeat to Georgia was their third in their last ten matches, following losses to both Slovenia and Croatia - a cause for concern, perhaps. Yet with a star studded squad, Portugal won all ten Euro qualifiers to be here, and their early performances offered much hope.
Rafael Leao's pace and power down the left hand side has caused plenty of issues, and although Ronaldo has yet to score, his presence will always be a threat and make the opposition think about his movement - especially inside the box. Minus the Georgia defeat, Portugal have looked solid - and France cannot underestimate them.
France, on the other hand, have only lost one match in their last ten games in all competitions - (2-0 vs Germany) who they may face in the semi-finals.
Poor performances in the group will have been a concern for their fans, but they are still yet to lose, and having only conceded twice, they will fancy themselves to grow into the tournament. It's only a matter of time before Kylian Mbappe writes his own headlines, and this could be the game where he finally breaks his Euros duck.
Another tight game is expected as we reach the quarter-final stage of the Euros but with Portugal struggling against the minnows, it looks worth taking a chance on France continuing to protect their crown in Germany.
Although the draw offers plenty of value between these two nations, France's performance against Belgium was a level up from what we had previously seen. That might just be the start of their tournament and with Portugal struggling to score, it may only take a single goal for the French to prevail.
Despite the talent on show, it might all come down to one moment, and the way in which the tournament is unfolding that might fall the way of the French. Goals at a premium appears likely at this stage of the competition.
But that doesn't mean Ronaldo will stop trying. The Portuguese forward has had 20 shots in the tournament without scoring, and with the Al-Nassr forward continuing to fire shots at goal, this could be a welcome addition to my proposed bet builder.
My Dutch bet builder came in last time out, and so I'm going to stick with a similar approach. I'm siding with France double chance, Ronaldo over 1.5 shots and under 2.5 match goals at 5/4 with bet365.
