It’s an intriguing encounter. Portugal is favourites against a Slovenian side who haven’t tasted defeat in Euro 2024. Roberto Martinez’s first defeat came against Matjaz Kek’s men in March earlier this year.
Many backed Portugal to go all the way before the tournament began. They have a squad with ridiculous talent. Roberto Martinez’s men defeated the Czech Republic and Turkey in their opening two matches. Willy Sagnol’s side caused a shock result as Georgia beat a heavily rotated Portugal 2-0 in the final group game.
There isn’t much else to say about Cristiano Ronaldo. He’s a phenomenon of the game. However, some believe that he holds the Portuguese side back. The 39-year-old has recorded 11 shots in Germany and is yet to score.
A Seleção are priced at 1.16 to navigate their way into the next stage. A comfortable win is likely, but Slovenia are yet to lose in this competition.
Matjaz Kek’s men have been excellent. They’re yet to taste defeat in Euro 2024 and haven’t been in any real threat. Slovenia came from behind to draw with Denmark. They were just seconds away from claiming a victory over Serbia. England was up next. What a dull game that was. Slovenia did their job; they earned a point after limiting Southgate’s men to just 0.80Xg and one big chance.
Benjamin Sesko is the star. The man from RB Leipzig is a threat. He’s physical, quick, and will give the Portuguese defenders a tough time. Zan Karnicnik has been a standout performer from right back. He scored Slovenia’s goal in that clash with Serbia. Kek’s side will be organised and compact as they aim to limit their opponents.
These nations have met just once before. That clash arrived in March 2024. Slovenia won the encounter 2-0 in Ljubljana. Portugal dominated possession and completed more than double the number of passes. Goals from Adam Cerin and Timi Elsnik were enough to claim an impressive victory.
Matjak Kek’s men will take confidence from that encounter. They have shown that they can limit their opponents to few chances. England struggled to break them down in a match where they recorded just 12 shots.
Martinez’s side have no need to rush. They'll know Slovenia will play in a low block and allow nothing in behind. It’s a game between teams with contrasting styles.
Slovenia will thrive once again as they arrive here as underdogs. They’ll fancy their chances in this encounter. Kek’s men have looked a solid outfit so far in Germany.
The pressure is on Portugal. Martinez’s men are overwhelming favourites to overcome their opponents. A Seleção have already lost to Slovenia this year. Can lightning strike twice?
I’ve looked at the markets for this encounter and have backed a three-part bet builder as my selection.
Adam Cerin, Jaka Bijol and Vanja Drkusic are the players involved.
Adam Cerin plays his football in Greece with Panathinaikos. The 24-year-old has played every single minute of Euro 2024 so far. I don’t expect that to change on Monday night. Cerin has recorded a shot in all three matches so far. He isn’t afraid to unleash an attempt from a distance. The desperation factor could kick in if his side are behind. We need just one shot from our man.
Jaka Bijol has made five fouls in total in three matches in Germany. The man from Udinese committed three fouls against England. I’m expecting the central defender to be busy in Frankfurt. Bijola averaged 1.21 fouls per 90 in Serie A across the 23/24 season.
Vanka Drkusic is likely to play alongside Jaka in central defence. He’s committed a foul in every encounter, with four in total. The defender plays his trade in Russia with PFC Sochi. He averaged 1.14 fouls per 90 in his third season with the club.
Our selection is straightforward. Adam Cerin Over 0.5 Shots, Jaka Bijol Over 0.5 Fouls Committed & Vanka Drkusic Over 0.5 Fouls Committed at 6.41 (5.41/1). It’s a bet that’ll be enjoyable to cheer on.
