International football returns this weekend, with an intriguing set of World Cup qualifiers. For this week’s betting tips, we are focusing on the semi-final matchup between Portugal and Turkey at the Estadio Do Dragao.
Portugal will have to go through the arduous World Cup qualifiers to make it to Qatar. The former European champions were on the brink of automatic qualification, but a last-minute Alexander Mitrovic header in Serbia cemented Portugal’s spot against Turkey.
Fernando Santos’ side do have the benefit of having an arguable ‘GOAT’ on their team, however, they’ll be missing some other key pieces. For example, veteran central defender Pepe has had to exit the squad due to COVID-19, and City defender Ruben Dias is sidelined due to injury. Bad timing for Portugal.
Turkey were once hailed as the dark horses for Euro 2021, but they failed miserably and will be looking to make things right in 2022. Although, the Turks did impress during World Cup qualifying. Stefan Kuntz side finished second behind the Netherlands in group G, but ahead of the Haaland-powered Norway
As for squad news, Turkey are better off than their Portuguese counterparts. Mert Muldur has been welcomed back after suspension, and the defence looks to remain untouched. At the top end, Galatasaray winger Kerem Akturkoglu could feature after impressing domestically, with veteran Burak Yilmaz expected to lead the line.
Despite both teams being regular competitors in international competition, the two teams haven’t met since 2012. Whilst ten years have passed, the frontmen for both teams have still played a huge role in their team’s success.
On Portugal’s side, they’ll be looking to big-game player Cristiano Ronaldo to fire them to another World Cup. The 37-year-old netted six goals during qualifying, and they’ll be hoping he can do the same. But Turkey has a veteran of their own. Burak Yilmaz himself scored five times during qualifying, and if he finds his form, Turkey could advance to the qualifying final.
This game should be entertaining. Both teams have game changers at the top end of the field, and there’s a place in Qatar on the line for either side. With that being said, we are going with the home team for the victory. Portugal to win and over 2.5 goals with 888Sport at 21/20.
