Congratulations to Wakefield Trinity on becoming only the sixth team in history to win the Super League Grand Final. They join Wigan Warriors, St Helens, Bradford Bulls, Leeds Rhinos and Hull Kingston Rovers on the list of honours.
It was a remarkable story for Wakefield because this was their second season back in the top flight following relegation down to the Championship in 2023. They gained promotion as champions in 2024 and reached the play-offs in their first season back.
Nobody outside Wakefield felt they had a chance of winning the Super League Grand Final - they started the 2026 campaign as 40/1 outsiders with the Super League betting odds. Not exactly Leicester City odds to win the Premier League, but still massive.
Whether Trinity can go back-to-back remains to be seen, but there will be one team looking to emulate what they have done. The only problem is this team is not yet confirmed as a Super League side.
London Broncos emphatically won the Championship Grand Final with a 78-6 hammering over Doncaster at the Cherry Red Records Stadium. In other sports, winning the competition would see that team promoted automatically, but this is rugby league.
There has been no confirmation as of yet whether or not London Broncos will be given their deserved spot in Super League. The RFL are currently in negotiations with the NRL about a proposed takeover deal. The RFL are not 100% keen on London being in Super League, while the NRL apparently do want them in.
The decision will revolve on whether or not the league is expanded to 15 teams or to be kept with 14. The problem is, again in other sports the team finishes bottom is relegated. That team in 2026 was Bradford Bulls and it seems highly unlikely that they will be removed seeing as they have agreed to play a Super League game in Las Vegas next year against the Leigh Leopards.
While that decision is being made, online bookmaker Bet365 has opted to include the Broncos in the list of teams to win the 2027 Grand Final. That is strange in itself, but they actually have better odds than five teams that are already playing in Super League.
Arguments about whether or not they should be in Super League will continue to rumble on, but at this moment in time the Super League betting odds have them at 40/1 to be the new champions of England and become the third new successive team on the trophy.
For what it's worth, I do think they will include London next season, but I am not 100% sure on how they will do it. Bradford have played a blinder in securing the Las Vegas deal, because there is no way they can be cut now.
Watch this space.
It is safe to say that Wakefield Trinity will not be a 40/1 chance to win the Super League Grand Final in 2027, but they will find it hard to defend their title just like Hull Kingston Rovers did.
It is easier being the hunter rather than the hunted in professional sport. They will feel everyone is out to beat them and every decision is against them, but they will take that so they can tell the world they are champions.
The usual suspects lead the way at the top of the Super League betting odds with Wigan the favourites with Leeds, Hull KR, St Helens and Warrington next in line. Trinity are sixth favourites, and for defending champions that is a bit harsh, but it shows how unlikely it was in the first place.
