Borussia Dortmund make the trip to SC Paderborn this Sunday on the back of a bitterly disappointing defeat to Bayern Munich earlier this week. That 1-0 reverse at home to the Reds may well have ended any lingering hopes the Black and Yellows had of taking the Bundesliga title this season. Paderborn are unbeaten since the league resumed but are yet to record a victory in their three games so far since action got back underway. Read on to find out where the betting value can be found for Sunday’s game!
Steffen Baumgart has a tough task when it comes to motivating his players for the rest of the season. Paderborn are anchored to the foot of the Bundesliga table and look to have little chance of avoiding the drop. They are currently nine points behind FSV Mainz 05 who sit in 15th, and eight points behind the rapidly improving Fortuna Dusseldorf, who are in 16th. The team have been hard to beat since Bundesliga action resumed, though. Their three matches so far have ended in draws, and they have only conceded one goal, at home to Hoffenheim, in that run of games.
Lucien Favre’s Dortmund team will have been bitterly disappointed to have lost 1-0 to table-topping Bayern Munich earlier this week, especially as the game was at home. They are now seven points behind Bayern with just six games remaining in the title race, and their hopes of being crowned champions look over. Favre may change his line-up for the clash with Paderborn in the hope of boosting morale and freshening up the team after a passionate Der Klassiker against Bayern. That could mean that English winger Jadon Sancho, who came off the bench against Munich, could be named in the starting line-up.
Paderborn have been defensively solid in the three games played since the Bundesliga resumed action. They will need to be on Sunday too, if recent clashes between the teams are anything to go by. The teams drew 3-3 at Dortmund earlier in the season, but going back further than that it is the Black and Yellows who have dominated proceedings. The last two clashes between the teams prior to this season were not in the Bundesliga, however, something which may give the home side some hope.
In January 2017, Paderborn were beaten 6-1 at home by Dortmund. This was in a club friendly, though, so punters should not read too much into the result. In October 2015 the two clubs met in the German Cup. Again, the result was a painful one for Paderborn, with the team from North Rhine-Westphalia losing 7-1. Prior to that, the two teams last clashed in the Bundesliga in the 2014/15 season. Again, there were plenty of goals. In November 2014 the game at Paderborn finished 2-2. In the reverse fixture, in April 2015, Dortmund won 3-0 at home. If you think that the goals will fly in again on Sunday then Unibet are offering a price of 3.70 on there being over 4.5 goals in the game.
Paderborn do have one player who should be feared by the Dortmund rearguard. Dennis Srbeny has scored four of his five Bundesliga goals in his team’s last five home matches. If you fancy him to add another to his tally against Dortmund, Unibet are offering a price of 4.50 for the former Norwich City man to score at any time in the game. Streli Mamba is another possible threat to the Dortmund defence. He is the club’s joint top scorer in the Bundesliga with five goals to his name.
Dortmund will be without two of their main attacking threats on Sunday. Strikers Marco Reus, who has 11 Bundesliga goals to his name, and Erling Haaland are both absent with injury. That might see the club’s leading scorer, Jadon Sancho, play a role in the starting line-up rather than coming off the bench.
Despite the number of goals scored in this fixture in recent seasons, we actually suspect that this will be a tight game, and possibly a tougher test for Dortmund than they anticipate. Paderborn are unbeaten since the resumption of the league, and have only conceded once in three games. Dortmund will be hurting after that Bayern defeat, though, and the sting of that loss may provide enough motivation for them to secure all three points. It will be close, though. We’ll tip the visitors to win the game 1-0. Our recommended betting tip comes from Unibet, who are offering odds of 2.55 on Dortmund to win to nil.
