This has been a familiar fixture in recent months. Let's hope we witness another affair with plenty of action.
Slovenia has performed well at times this calendar year. They began 2024 with a win over the USA, followed by an underwhelming draw with Malta. Portugal was up next in Ljubljana. Slovenia won 2-0 on home soil, raising a few eyebrows. A victory over Armenia and a 1-1 draw with Bulgaria steads them in good shape ahead of the competition.
Group C will be tricky. England is the standout nation. Denmark is ranked second favourite to qualify, with Serbia third and then Matjaz Kek’s men. Slovenia should head to Germany in confident spirits. It’s now 12 consecutive matches where Slovenia have found the back of the net, including two encounters with their upcoming opponents, Denmark.
The Danes have had respect for a lengthy period. Their World Cup in Qatar was abysmal. Denmark was toothless, scoring just a single goal and earning as many points. Their Euro qualification campaign was satisfactory, considering the level of opposition.
Kasper Hjulmand’s squad has talent across the board. Kasper Schmeichel brings plenty of experience at this level. Defensively, they have quality, but results have failed to show that in recent months. That qualifying group contained Slovenia, Finland, Kazakhstan, Northern Ireland and San Marino. Denmark conceded in seven of ten matches. Even San Marino found the back of the net.
Victories against Sweden and Norway in early June will give them a boost. Again, they failed to keep a clean sheet in either clash.
These nations have met six times since 1996. Denmark won each of the four earliest encounters up until 2008. The pair drew 1-1 in June 2023 at Stadion Stozice in front of 14,382 supporters. Joakim Maehle and Thomas Delaney’s strikes were enough to see off Slovenia in Copenhagen last November. Erik Janza was on the scoresheet for the visitors that night.
Either side will know their counterparts. Despite Slovenia being a big underdog, they’ll arrive here with confidence. Denmark has the better players and many more recognisable names, but the pressure is on them to perform. That World Cup display will be in the back of their minds. Failure isn’t an option.
International football can be a tricky task to call when looking at the statistics. There are far fewer matches than club football, which throws the form book out the window.
Despite all that, here are three interesting stats ahead of this Euro 2024 match between Slovenia vs Denmark.
I’ve taken a bet in the main markets for this encounter. Both sides have the capabilities to make this an entertaining watch. The price was appealing and one I couldn’t turn away from.
It’s true. Opening round group stage matches in tournaments such as the European Championships don’t always produce many goals. Despite that, I’m keen on going against the grain and backing both sides to find the back of the net. The price is attractive at 2.00 (1/1).
I previously stated Slovenia’s impressive current scoring streak. Benjamin Sesko is the man to keep an eye on. RB Leipzig’s highly-rated forward is a massive threat and will be desperate to display his best performances on the biggest of stages. Sesko bagged in seven consecutive Bundesliga matches at the end of the 23/24 season.
Denmark has more than enough to find a goal. Rasmus Hojlund will lead the line; Jonas Wind will likely play alongside the Manchester United man. Andreas Skov Olsen and Christian Eriksen provide offensive quality.
The Danes have conceded in 16 of their previous 25 matches in all competitions. Don't underestimate Slovenia. They’ll be confident in a clash that’s well up for grabs. BTTS – Yes is my preferred selection, which is available at 2.00 (1/1).
