Spain came into their Euro 2024 campaign with a point to prove. Having won just two matches in 90 minutes in the last World Cup and Euros combined, a tough match vs Croatia could have easily extended that run. However, it was anything but the tight affair anticipated, as Spain ran out 3-0 winners - and it could have easily been more.
Alvaro Morata was calm and composed to slot home the opener, before Fabian Ruiz and Daniel Carvajal got in on the action. They'll be heading into their fixture vs Italy full of confidence and looking to put one foot into the knockout stage.
After conceding the quickest ever goal scored at the Euros inside 24 seconds, Italy did well to regroup and claim all three points with a narrow 2-1 victory. The concern for Italy is whether they switch off again at a key moment, because it's likely Spain will punish them if they are in the same mood.
Their equaliser, however, stood out after a well-worked corner routine was headed home by Alessandro Bastoni. This could be the way in which Italy secure points in this tie, utilising their height in attacking areas. On the ground, however, they will struggle to go toe-to-toe with a very strong Spain side.
Spain have come out on top of three of the last five head-to-heads when facing Italy, but did not lose inside 90 minutes across all matches. In fact, you have to go back to 2016 the last time the Italians got the upper hand against the Spanish.
The favourites for this match have also only lost one of their last 10 matches across all competitions (a 1-0 friendly vs Colombia) winning eight and drawing the other (3-3 vs Brazil).
Momentum is firmly with Luis de la Fuente's team and an opportunity to win and rest players vs Albania would be the jackpot.
Italy have also only lost one of their last ten matches (3-1 vs England) but they haven't faced anyone which would worry Spain. Narrow victories over the likes of Bosnia, Ukraine, Venezuela and of course, Albania, won't be giving Fuente sleepless nights just yet.
However, it's their defence which is strong, having conceded just two goals in their last five matches. This is the first time Italy's defence doesn't have Giorgio Chiellini in a long time, but they've adapted better than anyone would have imagined without him.
Arguably one of the more intriguing matches of the tournament so far looks hard to call on paper. However, the way in which Spain strutted around the pitch vs Croatia makes their price look incredibly appealing.
Having failed to deliver at the World Cup, or previous Euros for that matter, we're seeing a new generation come through and their identity is clear.
There was little to no surprise Barcelona's Lamine Yamal (16) in the headlines but Nico Williams on the other wing (21) also impressed. With pace either side of Alvaro Morata, their front three looks deadly.
In behind, the likes of Manchester City's Rodri, Barcelona's Pedri and PSG's Fabian Ruiz all offer a threat, and for the first time in a while, Spain's transition period could be coming to an end. If Spain get the ball down and play, Italy could easily become undone a lot easier than the odds suggest.
Spain head into the tie full of confidence, and if they win once more, first place in Group B will likely be theirs. I was seriously impressed with their opening performance, and at odds-against, it's difficult to not back Spain to beat Italy at 8/7 with bet365.
