The European Champions Italy continue their World Cup qualifying campaign as they travel to Switzerland. Both teams are fresh off successful Euros and are looking to continue their unbeaten start to qualifying. For today’s betting tip, we’ll be focusing on Roberto Mancini’s Italy as they face a Switzerland side with a new man at the helm.
The major talking point surrounding Switzerland before this international break is over new manager Murat Yakin. Former manager Vladimir Petkovic led Switzerland to the Euros quarter finals before exiting for Bordeaux and leaving the keys to Yakin. Yakin will look to continue Switzerland's faultless start tio qualifying.
Switzerland will also be without numerous stars from their European Championship campaign. Breel Embolo is unable to make the squad after suffering an injury during the Euros and Xherdan Shaqiri misses out.
Two players without a single cap have been called up in defence. Cedric Zessiger and Ulisses Garcia are selected, but Wolfsburg right-back Kevin Mbabu won’t be a part of Switzerland's defence for the upcoming fixtures.
The European Champions are looking to extend their historic unbeaten run when they face Switzerland. Mancini’s side are 34 games unbeaten and have a perfect record in qualifying. Through three games, Italy has nine points with three 2-0 victories over Northern Ireland, Lithuania, and Bulgaria.
Many of the names from the European Championship winning squad remain. Tournament stalwarts such as Jorginho, Giorgio Chiellini, Leonardo Bonucci, and Federico Chiesa return. However, Italy will be without Leonardo Spinazzola after his injury in Euro 2020.
Juventus’ Moise Kean returns to the squad after an absence over the summer and in-form Davide Calabria has been selected.
These two sides last faced each other during the European Championships. Both teams were selected in Group A and played one another on matchday two. Italy dominated the proceedings and ran out 3-0 winners on the night reducing Switzerland to a single shot and confirming their spot atop Group A.
Besides the 2020 Euros, the sides haven't played each other for more than a decade. Usually the game is tight, three of the last five have ended as a draw, but Italy seem on a warpath. After 34 unbeaten, Mancini’s side is brimming with confidence and face a Switzerland side with no game experience under their new coach.
These two sides can’t be separated in the World Cup qualifiers. Switzerland have shown how they can go toe-to-toe with Europe’s elite but have some key players missing. Whereas Italy has an opportunity to go 35 unbeaten, so we’re predicting an Italy win. You can back an Italy win with 11/10 odds with SportNation.
