In football, you should never count your chickens before they have hatched. Many Spurs fans thought they had already won the title following a blistering start that saw them win eight of their opening 10 league matches with two ending in draws.
All the gloating and crowing from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium has died down recently with three consecutive defeats seeing them not only drop out of the title race but out of the Champions League places as well. Can they make up the ground and get back on track?
I have to admit, Spurs did look like genuine Premier League title contenders at the start of the season, but this is a marathon not a sprint. I know Ange Postecoglou has had some injury problems, but I am not sure anyone saw a collapse of three defeats coming after the start they had.
That losing run came to an end at the weekend as they claimed a late point away at champions Manchester City. Some will say Spurs were lucky after the referee called back play when it appeared Jack Grealish was through on goal, but that is another matter. He blew the whistle and Spurs gained a point. It's results and performances like that which can spearhead a run of form that will get them back in the hunt for the title.
Spurs still have some injury worries with James Maddison, Ryan Sessegnon, Ivan Perisic and Pape Sarr all still on the treatment table. Richarlison is back from a pelvic problem and played the last few minutes at City, he will be hoping for more game time on Thursday as he goes in search of his first goal since September.
West Ham United are climbing up the table and pushing for yet another European campaign. The Hammers are another team that can be hit and miss. They have moved up to ninth and have won two of their last three matches with one ending in a draw.
Despite still fighting on the European front in the Europa League, West Ham are handling both competitions quite well as they are in the top half of the Premier League and have already booked their place in the Europa League knockout stages.
Unlike Postecoglou, West Ham manager David Moyes has nearly a full squad to choose from. The only absentee is Jamaica international Michail Antonio who is currently sidelined with a knee injury.
Spurs have managed to win 33 out of 64 home matches against West Ham United over the years. The Hammers have only won 17 on the road.
West Ham have not won away from home against Tottenham since a 1-0 win back in April 2019 when Antonio scored a second half winner.
Out of their last five meetings in the Premier League, Tottenham have won two of them - as have West Ham. Tottenham won their last encounter at this ground with Emerson Royal and Son Heung-Min getting on the scoresheet in a 2-0 win.
Tottenham seem to have the run over the Hammers in recent years - especially on home soil - and this should be an entertaining contest with both teams keen to play attacking football. Along with these brief stats, check out the betting odds before kick-off on Thursday evening.
Our Betting Tip For Today - Spurs to win & over 3.5 goals @ 11/4 Ladbrokes
Despite not winning any of their last four Premier League matches, Tottenham are favourites to see off West Ham at 7/10. The Hammers are on offer at 5/2 to put a spanner in the works of Tottenham's title push. You can back the draw at 11/4.
When they are playing with confidence, Spurs are a joy to watch. Hopefully for their supporters and the Premier League in general, Tottenham can launch a genuine assault on the title.
The way they scored three goals away at Man City shows they have to talent in their squad, if they can keep things ticking over until the likes of Maddison and Perisic return, they will be in a good place early next year.
I am backing Spurs to win this one with over 3.5 goals being scored in what should be an exciting game.
